Soft Christmas music echoes around the penthouse, quiet voices filling the space the sound doesn't quite reach, small sounding bells ring out and the smell of fresh cookies fill my nose. I watch from the couch, mulled wine in hand, as Wanda and the boys are digging through boxes labelled 'XMAS DECS'.
My eyes drift over to Wanda as she bends down to reach into one of the boxes, her sweatpants slightly tightening around her ...
"You know you could just take a picture." My eyes move up slightly to see Wanda smirking at me over her shoulder, I match her smirk before taking a sip of my drink.
"I think sometimes just being in the moment is better than a picture. You know, you and the boys unpacking the decorations in the penthouse." She shakes her head a little as she goes back to digging through the box.
"Yeah, and you just keep sitting there enjoying your wine." I take a sip as she looks back at me, slowly standing up to face me.
"Well it is very good wine." Wanda smiles softly as she makes her way over to me, taking the glass from my hand and taking a sip for herself. "And I have never actually decorated the tree here, Papa T has people for that. I've only really decorated the tree with mom and dad when the children were younger now, that I'm the tallest, I put the angel on top while I watch them all argue about the fact that one bauble is too close to another bauble."
I hear her chuckle lowly, glancing back at the boys who have a quiet excitement about them as they continue to dig through the box of decorations.
"Well I think it's time to change that and make our own traditions as a family." She puts the glass of wine down on the coffee table taking my hand in hers, and I stand up as she squeezes my hand lovingly. "Me and the boys have something for you."
"But it's not Christmas yet." Wanda bites her lip and shakes her head, her thumb rubbing along my knuckles.
"It's not a gift. It's how we want to start this tradition." I see the nervousness in the way her feet shuffle on the floor, the bite in her lip and her eyes searching mine for reassurance.
"Well then let's start our Christmas tradition by creating them." I lean down, bringing Wanda in for a soft kiss that, although only momentary, holds meaning behind it.
"Okay," she whispers against my lips before pulling away and turning to the twins. "Boys, have you got the box there for Y/n?"
"Right here mother dearest." Billy mocks as he holds up a box decorated in snowflake wrapping paper.
"Less of the cheek." Wanda scoffs as Billy pokes his tongue out at her as we make our way over.
"Sit." Tommy demands as he gets up to grab a cushion from the couch, placing it on the floor before patting it for me to sit on.
I plonk myself down, rather ungracefully, struggling to decide if I want to be crisscross applesauce or have my legs slightly bent out in front of me.
I choose the former when Billy places the box in my hands while trying to contain his excitement, his eyes darting from me to the box; what I see now isn't fully closed and the top part is open: filled with Christmas coloured tissue paper to hide the contents. I decide not to give it a rattle to try and listen for what it could be, in fear of it falling out the top.
"Okay so before you start digging through this I just want to explain the origin of it." My full attention turns to my beautiful girlfriend who is glowing in the sun coming through the windows.
"I'm listening." I put the box on the floor next to me to avoid distraction.
"So this came about when we went to Canada together. Specifically in Banff, but I think these hold the memories of the whole trip really. I saw them and I just knew that to be able to start new traditions we would have to bring memories with us to always honour them. I showed the boys, who helped decorate the box, and they agreed that you should be the one to place the first decoration...well first two."
