   After Klaus left Nicole talked to the girls for a bit trying to find out what Stefan wanted to talk to her about; Caroline suggested it might be about their current relationship status but none of them were completely sure. Nicole was nervous. Stefan was either pissed or thoroughly confused. She excused herself and went to the kitchen to get water. Damon was pouring blood from a blood bag into a glass. "Ugh that smells so bad." Nicole said while putting her sleeves over her nose and mouth. "You can smell that?" Damon asked with a weirded out face. Nicole nodded. "Ah that's right you're part wolf." He said with a smirk. "I'm never gonna get used to that smell." Nicole said and grimaced at the odor. Damon shrugged. "So you gonna talk to Stefan? He's been more broody than usual thanks to you." He said with a glare. Nicole furrowed her brow. "What do you mean?" She asked totally confused. Damon sighed in frustration. "He likes you, you idiot. He likes you and you're stringing him along because you think he's still hung up on Elena." Nicole cut him off. "I like him too!" She started to raise her voice. "So what the hell is stopping you?!" Damon yelled at her. "Maybe the fact that he is still in love with Elena!" Nicole was yelling now. "She was his 'epic love' as Caroline says so often. Now she chose you and he's heartbroken. She's his first choice!" She took a breath. "I can't compete with that." Nicole said in defeat. Damon sighed. "Okay I get that; but are you even gonna try?" He asked frustrated. "I am trying! I'm trying to balance this friendship; relationship; whatever it is, so I don't overstep or hurt anyone. You, Stefan or Elena." Damon nodded and pointed to the door. "Go tell him that." He said above a whisper. Nicole rolled her eyes. "Well considering the vamp hearing; he probably already heard." She said aggravated. "I know; that was the plan." Damon said with a huge smirk on his face. Nicole walked over and slapped him. "Don't ever get involved in my love life again. I may just trigger my werewolf gene if you do." With that she walked out of the kitchen and up the stairs.

She walked into Stefan's room but didn't see him. "Stefan?" She asked looking around. She felt a gust of wind behind her. "You're behind me aren't you?" She asked in realization. Stefan smiled and vamped in front of her. "Hi." He said quickly. Nicole jumped at his appearance. "Sorry, didn't mean to scare you." He said grabbing her hand. Nicole smiled. "Well I think your vamp quota on scaring humans is full for today." She said pulling her hand away. They both chuckled. Nicole's smile dropped. "I'm sorry you had to hear Damon and me. I didn't know he was setting me up." She said with sincerity. Stefan shook his head. "It's ok. I understand what you're feeling; and I appreciate you trying to take everyone's feelings into consideration." He said with a smile. Nicole shifted awkwardly. "Is that why you've been distant whenever we hang out?" He asked moving closer to her. Nicole nodded. She was riddled with guilt because she really liked Stefan but Elena was her best friend's sister and wasn't ready to cause more drama or make Elena hate her more. "Look, I'm gonna be honest with you because I owe you that." Nicole said taking a deep breath. "I've had feelings for you for a long time; since the first time I saw you actually." She chuckled with her words caught in her throat. "I still do but I know you still LOVE Elena and I'm not really up for being your rebound or replacement." Nicole said sadly. Stefan was staring at the floor. "Stefan, please say something." Stefan sighed. "So what do you wanna do? You wanna just walk away from this? Just forget any feelings we had for each other?" He asked disappointed. Nicole could hear the hurt in his voice. Nicole didn't want that but she didn't want to be 2nd best either. "I think we should be friends for now, so you can heal and we'll see what happens." She said with a small smile. Stefan nodded. He couldn't look at her. "Fine." He said with a frown. Nicole saw him clench his jaw in anger. "I'm so sorry Stefan." She kissed his cheek, ran out of his room and down the stairs where everyone had sad expressions. Elena looked full of guilt. As did Damon. Caroline approached Nicole first. "Come on, I'll drive you home." Nicole nodded and walked out of the house with tears in her eyes.
