To Be Alone
I fall to the serenity of the earth.
Dirt and sand stir around my feet
as I walk through a body of still water,
surrounded by tall green soldiers
rooted in the soil.
Birds caw and twitter overhead,
circling the sun,
a sacred idol they protect.
The tail of my white dress follows in my wake
with each ripple that pushes me
farther from grassy shores.
the warm lake swallows me whole.
I hear the faint buzz of the dragonflies
skimming the surface of reflected trees.
the smell of moss and rain dance in the foliage.
Bubbles tumble between my toes;
I sway my feet in the water.
I am truly alone in this peaceful place,
but never lonely.
