"Aren't they just adorable?" Eliza asked, holding up the maroon colored skirt.
It was a week before school and everyone had received their new uniforms. You suppose the academy decided to change up the new colors, now maroon and white. It was darker than before but it looked good. The men's outfits were all maroon minus the shirt, allowed to wear whatever tie they wanted. Their blazers were pretty sharp with the school insignia embroidered in white. A lot of the girls were happy to match the boys, a problem solved for lovey-dovey couples.
"They look good."
Eliza smiled in agreement, hanging hers back in the closet.
While you weren't crazy over them it was another thing to signal the end of summer and the coming of the new fall semester. You had a lot of goals for this school year. From excelling at all your classes to getting a boyfriend. You bit your lip at the last one. You had no idea where to start. Most couples begin in the freshmen year but you had so much going on you didn't have a chance, barely passing your classes.
No matter. Finding a boyfriend wasn't your top priority anyway. It was just a much appreciated bonus. Smoothing out your uniform you hung it in the closet next to Eliza's. She was busy on the floor, organizing her book bag and pencil case.
"Really?"
"What?" She said, "It won't hurt any to be prepared. You should probably start too you know."
You glanced at a pile of books and papers in the corner. *sigh* She was right of course but it would take hours, maybe even days to sort through the papers; which ones to keep, to toss. You sifted through the pile picking up a few of the books. The best you could do was return the ones you wouldn't be needing anymore.
Walking across the grounds you noticed quite a few students entering through the gate, last minute party people no doubt. Everyone was getting settled back in for another school year. You entered the large building heading towards Student Services. The office was small and dim, one mopey girl sitting behind a short desk. She looked up as if to ask a question.
"Returning last year's books."
"Ah. Please fill out this form and place them in the pile over there."
You filled out the form (name, class, condition) and dropped off the books. You were about to leave when the intercom turned on.
"Miss _ please report to the Headmaster's office."
"I wonder what that's about."
The girl looked at you like you were some sort of rebel. You wanted to plead your case, 'I'm a good girl I swear!" Even so, you couldn't erase the feelings of worry as you climbed the stairs, nor when you knocked on the thick door.
"Enter."
Doing so you stepped into the room. He was behind his desk like usual though things were surprisingly neat and tidy.
"Miss _ nice to see you again." He smiled.
After no response he continued, "You're not in trouble or anything. I just wanted to see how things were...just checking up on you."
"Checking up?"
He folded his hands, "Tell me, are you doing okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine."
He sat for a minute before accepting your answer.
"How do you like the new uniforms?"
"They're nice. A lot of the students seem to like them."
"Good, good."
He adjusted his glasses, growing serious, "Tell me...what do you think of vampires?"
"Huh?"
"You seem to be handling this all rather well, I dare say. Has it been that long since you've been attacked?"
What was his deal?
"Excuse me?"
"Oh, I mean no disrespect. Just think about exactly who these people are and their motives."
"I know exactly who my friends are. They're PEOPLE-vampire or not. Honestly...not too long ago I would've judged anyone who said they believed in them. I mean, they're things of fiction. Stereotyped on TV and in movies. I quickly found out the misconception about them. It seems to me that you're the only one having a problem with this."
He chuckled softly, "Does it appear that way? I am genuinely concerned for you _. Of course everything is sunshine and rainbows now. But what happens when they betray your trust? I just want you to be prepared for what and WILL happen. My offer still stands."
"No matter what happens those people are my friends." You turned to leave.
"Oh, I thought you'd like to know that the student who attacked you several times will be returning to school."
"What?"
"Yes, Mr. Gilbert Beilshmidt is allowed back on campus grounds. You understand we couldn't expel him on the sole stipulation that he had bitten you, seeing how others had and you chose not to punish them. The rules apply to all, so due to his *ahem* sexual misconduct Mr Beilshmidt had been suspended; surprisingly enough he passed his classes so you two will be in the same grade."
"..."
With nothing more to say you left his office, shutting the door behind you.
