"As you may know, we start a new segment today."

You took out your notebook, listening to Professor Vargas' words.

He turned his back to the class while writing on the whiteboard. Two large words stood out in black marker.

VAMPIRE HUNTERS

You felt your heart skip a beat. The professor turned around, placing the cap back on the marker.

"Can anyone tell me about them?"

A male voice spoke up, "They're our enemy!"

He debated with that answer, "While it's not wrong, not all vampires feel that way. Anyone else?"

You timidly raised your hand.

"Ah, Miss _ go ahead."

"They're a group of people who hold a grudge against vampires. In the Middle Ages vampire numbers we're dwindling due to witch hunts so the vampires tried increasing their numbers. A select group of people have had a grudge ever since, wanting to get rid of all vampires."

"Wow, that was um, a very detailed answer. Thank you _."

The rest of the class was spent going over their reasoning, who they are, and so on.

"The practice of turning humans was outlawed in the late 1990's though many older vampires, the last generations ignore this, wanting to keep healthy numbers. Plans for tightening the rules in this matter are in progress."

The bell signaled a class change, you heading over to the Professor.

"Hm? Oh, _. How can I help you?"

"Are you all right?"

He gave a slightly shocked look, "What makes you ask that?"

"You just seemed...a little sad. Did something happen?"

He avoided your eyes before checking his watch, "We have a few minutes. Here, take a seat."

He leaned against his desk, deciding how to start.

"Are you aware vampires can leave a mark?"

You nodded.

"It has its own pros and cons. On one hand it protects them from other base creatures. Sometimes other vampires depending on your rank or bloodline. However, vampire hunters can also see the mark."

You knew he was speaking from experience.

"I was in love with a woman. She was beautiful with flowing brown hair, sun kissed skin with a soft scent of olive oil and rosemary. I truly loved her. So much, that I decided to place a mark on her. I wanted to protect her from other vampires. Back then we were a lot more territorial than we are now."

He fidgeted, licking his lips, "It wasn't other vampires I should have worried about...They found her. The Hunters. When she wouldn't tell where I was they held her captive to lure me out. However, I was too late."

You rested a hand on his arm, him coughing slightly.

"Ah, sorry. That isn't really a happy story, is it?"

"Not all stories should be happy. I'm glad you told me, Julius. Oh, sorry, Mr. Vargas."

He smiled softly.

"I too...I'm no stranger to how powerful a mark can be."

He gave a confused look, dark eyes silently asking for more.

You cleared your throat, "Ah, I should go now. Don't want to be late."

"Oh! Here. This should help."
