A shovel repeatedly hit you in the head. The classroom's lights were harsh on your eyes, the room loud. You sighed, turning to look out the window. The class droned on, the professor yelling.
Was that...?
Ludwig was outside on the track, jogging. He came to a stop, taking generous gulps from a water bottle.
How is he not hungover?!
You turned away, burying your face in your sweater, resting on your desk. Luckily the teacher left you alone, mind killing sounds coming over the P.A system, signaling the end of the day.
You wanted to go back to your bed but would have to traverse the loud, crammed hallway. You decided it would be better to wait for awhile, climbing the stairs, walking past the Headmaster's office, opening a door.
"Oh, _."
You barely registered there was another person in the room, Roderich sitting uncomfortably at the piano.
"Sorry, I can leave."
"Ah, no! That's okay. Don't leave on my account."
You shrugged it off, slouching into one of the chairs. The room was incredibly awkward but you didn't notice.
"Are you alright?"
"Hmm? Yeah, I had a late night with Ludwig in town."
"Oh, I see. Would you like some tea?"
You chuckled softly before answering, "Sure."
He stood up, tinkering at the counter. Everything around you was fuzzy, almost falling asleep when a teacup was presented in front of you. You gripped the cup, slowly sitting upright.
"Thanks." You mumbled, "Ouch; hot."
Roderich sat awkwardly on the other chair, watching.
"Seems like you had quite the night."
"Yeah. It was fun...or I least I think I had fun."
He smiled, "Glad to see you're enjoying your college days at least. Though I can't recommend making this a habit."
"Trust me, I won't."
He chuckled.
RING, RING!
You jolted in your chair, nearly dropping the tea cup. Roderich offered to hold your cup while you fished out your phone.
"Hello?"
"You ditched me!"
A voice poured through the phone, sobbing, "After I was kind enough to invite you, you go off bar hopping with that...that..."
"Francis I'm sorry"-
"No! Your words mean nothing to me. Though, I can't complain entirely. After you left I was sad by my love ditching me and was comforted in return."
"Ugh."
You weren't sure if it was the booze or him that was making you sick.
"Look, wine tasting isn't my thing."
"Nonsense! You just don't know it yet. Next weekend we'll go watch a play; I hear it's very good."
You moaned into the phone, curling up on the chair.
"_? What's wrong? Oh, last night re-visiting you this morning? Well serves you right! I never thought you to be the kind of irresponsible..."
You tuned him out, standing up.
"U-um, _?" Roderich asked with worry.
You hung up on Francis, stumbling into the hallway, ignoring Roderich. You wobbled into a bathroom stall sitting in a daze, trying to steady your breathing so you wouldn't get sick. You read the writing when you stopped, something written in red sharpie.
Frowning you sighed, skipping out on club, walking straight to your bed. The words never left, wondering how this rumor got started and by whom.
_ is a dirty slut.
* * *
The room was silent, Arthur's body tense. The man stood behind the wooden desk, wearing a smug smile.
"Mr. Kirkland, what brings you into my office?"
"You know very well."
He scoffed, sitting down in his chair, "Miss _ I presume?"
"You've heard the rumors."
The Headmaster's eyes grew cold and serious, "I have. Yet why does a rumor bring you into my office?"
"You know the type of people after it."
"It?"
"The Water of Life. You know it's her. In all honesty I don't trust you one bit. However you're the only other person who knows."
"Tell me, you drank her blood. Why doesn't the Water of Life course through you?"
"You drank her blood as well. It wasn't truly awakened until she became a vampire. No one has drank her blood since then."
"Really? I surely thought you would have sucked her dry."
"Do not put me on the same level as you."
"Ha, very well. I drank it, yes, and some of my age was given back to me. This was before she was turned, yes?"
Arthur didn't reply.
"That means it's even STRONGER now."
"Whatever you're scheming, stop. I'm only here to ask for her protection."
"Protection?"
"It'll only be a matter of time before the rumor reaches the students, if their parents haven't told them already. The only thing keeping her safe is that no one knows the Water of Life is a person."
The Headmaster stood, pacing around the room in thought.
"What are you asking of me, Arthur?"
"An alliance."
He laughed, "Alliance?"
"A temporary one, of course. I can't be everywhere at once. I need someone else looking out for _'s safety."
"That goes without saying. She is a student, after all. And as headmaster"-
"Cut the noble act. I'm sure you plan on keeping her for yourself. Despite that, I need her protected. I'm doing what I can to keep this under wraps. She should go home."
"Home? Won't that be rather suspicious?"
"She can make up the pretense of her parents being sick; I don't care. As long as it means she's away from this place. If anyone found out this whole Academy would be a war zone."
The Headmaster scowled.
"Despite...well, everything, your words do hold some truth. However the girl stays."
"But"-
"She will stay for now. Like you said, no one knows the gift is a person. We will keep her safe. If it becomes too dangerous we'll remove her to a safe location. I can't have any more blood spilled on Academy grounds."
"I'm glad we're in agreement then."
The Headmaster grinned, extending his hand. Arthur stared at it, emerald eyes meeting his, slowly shaking his hand.
"We have a deal, Mr. Kirkland. I will keep our little treasure safe. Don't think this means I'll forgive you for challenging me."
"Trust me, I don't. Believe me when I say the moment danger arises I will take her away from this place; take her where you'll never get your hands on her."
The Headmaster grinned, eyes turning dark red.
