I slowly opened my eyes, revealing a crow with wings the color of oil, beady eyes staring back.
Where am I?
Silver fog clung low to the damp earth, covering dark cobblestone. Old, dilapidated buildings surrounded me, barely holding themselves together. An illegible wooden sign creaked ominously in the chilly breeze. I looked down at myself, wearing an unfamiliar school uniform, white tights covering my thighs.
How did I get here?
I tiptoed further inside the ancient European town searching for an answer to my questions. Despite no signs of proof I can't help feeling I have a good reason for being afraid. Mud stuck to my shined black shoes, autumn chill cutting down to my bones.
Windows were broken, singed brown from still burning flames, the crackling reminiscent of a dubious omen. Claw marks scar the earth, cutting long and deep. A broken noose hangs from a wooden beam, dancing about in the breeze. My eyes widened at a stone wall covered in a splatter of blood, leaving an outline of the unfortunate soul.
Just what happened here?
A glint of light caught my eye, belonging to a silver locket buried in a scattering of damp straw. As soon as I touched the metal I recoiled at the surprising warmth. Swirls decorated the sides, etched not by a professional but a lover. A message scrawled across the back, small and faint.
'For the light of my life, the moon of my darkness.'
I carefully pried it open, two pictures inside scorched, leaving only black silhouettes. I froze, clutching the locket close to my chest as I felt a presence frightfully nearby.
I jumped out of my skin at a laugh, high and shrill, echoing all around me. It did not belong to a mere crow yet I wasn't convinced it belonged to a human, either. I tread cautiously towards the source, a well in the center of the dilapidated town. My heart thumped erratically as I crept nearer, every fiber of my being wanting to turn around. However I couldn't stop. As I peered over the edge into the dark, deep expanse two glowing red eyes stared back.
