What if?

What if everything will be different when Sophie is gone? What if Mine and Peeta's relationship will be different when Sophie is gone? What if Sophie's mother is still unable to care for Sophie? What if Sophie won't be happy with her new family? What if I won't be happy without her? But what if her mother is so kind she forgets about us? What if that's possible?

What if? What if? What if...

---

All these thoughts flood my mind with every second as I sit at the table with Effie. She's going on about wedding details but I'm so distant I haven't tuned into one word she's said in the last 20 minutes and she after a while pauses and notices. A moment later she asks

"What's wrong Katniss? You've not tuned in to the floral details since I started... Are you having second thoughts about the wedding?!"

I reply instantly

"No no! It's not that its just Sophie's leaving in a few days and its all just overwhelming me"

She nods understandingly and says

"Well I think we will all miss her. She's such a wonderful girl"

I nod in agreement and reply

"I'm just afraid she may forget about us"

Effie says

"Of course she won't forget! She'll never forget, I know that for a fact. You can't forget for amazing years of your life"

I guess she's right. Four years can't just vanish from your memory. I tell her

"Thanks Effie, we can do the wedding things next weekend. I think I'm just going to leave it for now"

She says that's fine and I walk home, so many what ifs on my shoulders and the most anxious part is that I know a week from now all my questions will be answered.

The next day I decide to go to the bakery with Peeta to get my mind off everything. Sophie is of course delighted to go to the bakery. Peeta tells me that he hasn't told anyone about the engagement and asks me if he can tell everyone. Of course I say he can, the sooner everyone finds out the sooner we know who will be able to come to the wedding. And besides he doesn't really have to ask me for permission to tell his family something. So just before opening time he calls one of his usual meetings with everyone, Jason calling out what ingredients need to be ordered throughout the week and Gracie talking about custom orders that need to be delivered and finally once all the business talk is completed Peeta gestures me to stand up beside him. I can't help but feel nervous as I stand beside him, hands shoved in pockets as my eyes watch Sophie playing across the room. I kind of tune out on his stalling words for a moment until I hear it slip from his lips

"We're getting married!"

Then once again the buzz of the announcement comes through, congratulations fluttering through the air as people fuss over the ring and tell us that they knew we would be engaged soon. When Gracie comes over to me she says with a warm grin

"Welcome to the Mellark Family"

I reply

"Thanks"

We all spend the next half an hour having a mini celebration. And by mini celebration I mean small plastic cups of sparkling water and a cupcake each. We then must put all away and get to work. Rachel offers to mind Sophie in her office as I help Peeta at his counter. He's filling cupcakes with jam and placing them on a tray, waiting until he has time to fill them. I immediately put an apron over my head, grab an icing bag and pipe icing quickly onto the tops. He watches with surprise as I do this with speed. He Says as I continue to ice the cupcakes

"You've gotten handy with that icing bag huh?"

I reply smartly, a grin dancing across my lips

"I had to learn something if I wanted to keep my job here"

He laughs for a moment before replying

"True, true"

The morning is very busy until lunch time, in which we close for one hour. We are all roasting and sweaty, I feel my clothes nearly sticking to me. We all eat in Rachel's office as there is a fan inside there. Gracie talks to me about wedding plans but I simply tell her we have nothing planned yet. We haven't even discussed it yet. And truth being I would like a civil ceremony, maybe just the two of us. It's how my parents were married. But I don't know if that's what Peeta wants so for now I decide to keep it to myself. The Bakery day flies by fast, I end up cutting my hand on one of the knifes as it slipped from my sweaty hand. And of course Peeta was immediately there bandaging it for me but when he's protective over stuff like this, kisses my fingers jokingly and asking if I'm okay I don't really complain.

When we get home that night I ask Peeta to go to bed and make my way to his art room. I grab a handful of pencils and paper before I sit down. It's about an hour before I'm interrupted when Peeta enters the room. He comes over and looks over my shoulder, he takes it in for a moment before a smile crosses his face and he looks at me whilst nodding

"That's a great idea, a really great idea"

The next day I spend in the art room also, with both Peeta and Sophie. Peeta draws pictures as I start constructing it. At first Sophie looks at my drawing with curiosity

"What are you doing mummy?"

"Making you something, something very special"

This gets her exciting and soon she has taken my spot in drawing, making masterpieces of her own. Peeta and I continue throughout the day and soon it is ready. Her box full of memories, her box to guarantee she'll never forget because we sure won't forget her.
