**| Sang's POV |**

I leaned up against the tree, the bark biting into my back, as I stared up at the cloudless sky. My face was still stinging from the slap my stepmother gave me a couple hours ago when she was sober enough to realize that we were in a car accident and why.

She went on a rampage and I took some damage. I didn't even see it coming. She blamed it all on me, going on about him finding us because I was putting myself out there for all the world to see, inviting men to go in between my legs. Then she slapped me and split my lip open.

Dad eventually pulled her back into her bedroom and they both hadn't come back out so I snuck out of the house to put some distance between the two of us. I had a feeling Dad was explaining to her that everything was going to be okay. He was going to use those contacts he was so fond of using whenever trouble came.

I shifted on my butt to remove a rock that poked into my butt and then stared up into the sky as birds sang around me. I would rather be up in the trees, closer to the sky but after a really bad attempt to climb up, I gave up, not wanting to hurt my ankle or shoulder even more. I also slipped and fell on my back before I could pull myself up onto the first branch.

That had hurt and was good enough to warn me to keep both of my feet on the ground for today.

The birds lulled me into a light sleep to make up for what I didn't get last night. Once again, I stayed up with the lights on and my eyes kept going back to the window, expecting to see Volto there.

A twig snapped, slowly waking me up from dreams of a man in a white mask standing over me. I tried to get away but my body refused to move. His hand reached out and touched me. I screamed and thrashed around but no one was around to help me.

"Sang, wake up," a familiar deep voice said. The hand on my shoulder shook me and I lashed out and hit a chest.

My eyes flew open and I jerked back, hitting the tree.

"Peanut?" The voice was soft and I had to blink a couple of times before Nathan came into view, the sun creating a red halo around his head thanks to his hair.

"Nathan," I whispered and then coughed. "What are you doing here?"

His eyes roamed over my face and his eyes hardened. "What happened to you?" He reached out and tried to touch the bandage on my forehead but I turned my head and he stopped moving. "Who did this to you?"

"No one, Nathan."

"Stop lying."

My shoulders drooped. "I was in an accident yesterday on my way to registration."

His eyes roamed my body and then my face again, stopping on my lips.

"And the lip? It's still bleeding."

I flicked my tongue out and tasted blood. I shrugged. "From the accident. It must have reopened when you woke me up."

Nathan sat down on the ground in front of me, grabbing my hand. "Peanut, what happened?"

I looked down at our linked hands. Why were my hands so much smaller than his?

"Sang?"

"My dad tried to avoid a deer and hit a tree instead. We are all fine, just some bumps and bruises."
