White fog came out in rhythmic breaths. Swirling in the air it looked as though it were dancing to some silent beat of a drum, outside the snow had stopped and rain had taken its place. Thick and heavy with sleet it fell against the roof in its thousands. I’d woken up early like always and the cold was still in the room. A smile had tickled the sides of my lips despite the nightmare as I shifted under the heavy duvet and further into the warmth. I looked out the window to where the tree was, I’d planned to hang Christmas lights all over it and send a photo to Maggie. She’d be sitting under the Pohutukawa tree by the beach with a barbeque going and kids playing in the water of a small sandy beach in the North Island. Jack and Keanu would be there as well, probably playing rugby in the sand while the girls laughed and awed at them. They would sit out under the stars at night with a bomb fire on the beach and fireworks, sparklers and fire crackers would taint the night sky and paint it with vivid colours and strength in sounds. Bell birds and Tui’s would wake you in the morning and rabbits would pester your veggie garden and Splash and Boy would break into mums garden, she’d be really pissed off at the lambs and dad would just laugh when he came home from work. My brother would be reading his book or walking with the dogs, never wearing any shoes because that was what he was like. Sometime during the day he would take me down to the rock pools and show me the fish and crabs that were swimming in there. Dad would go out with the old dingy and I would help him row, though I wasn’t very good. It wouldn’t matter, he’d let me go for my life and tell me what to do if this happened, or if that happened. We would catch fish and he’d go diving, bringing up three Crayfish and some Paua for dinner. Fish, quick fried Paua with lemon pepper and Crayfish on fresh white bread that mum had made was what we would eat out by the rocks in camp chairs. The trees would sway slightly in the breeze as night would fall. I smiled and wiped the tear away. “It’s never going to be like that again,” I say to myself and then heave out of bed. There’s no harm in remembering though. I stumbled down the stairs in my PJ’s and put the kettle on. Nymeria and Bingo came down early hearing the water boil and hiss with the heat. Bingo didn’t have to bark because I was in a good mood today and gave him his breakfast early, adding some dog roll as well. They both looked at me like I was going mad, but woofed it down within moments anyway.

I smiled and got some cereal out of the cupboard and started to cut up a banana to add, I looked through the fridge and found a can of peaches so I added that to the bowel as well. I grabbed three weetbix’s and put them in the bowel, adding the fruit on top of it and then the milk. Then sat down on the armchair and pulled a blanket over me, I found myself contempt with staring out at the rain. Bingo trotted over to me and sat on the ground by my feet.

“If it was not sleet and it was hot I could almost imagine it as being Christmas in Aussie,” I say smiling. “Maybe even back home in New Zealand,” I add letting my foot drop to rub Bingo’s head. He rolled over onto his stomach and let me rub back and forth with my toes. Somehow I felt like I wasn’t really in the right place today, I felt like everything was slightly surreal and almost dream like. Maybe it was because I hadn’t really thought about anything other than home… What it used to be like anyway. Or maybe my nightmare had shocked me and now I was acting on instinct instead of impulse or reality. Either way I smiled and started to eat. Contemplating wether to go out today or not was on my list. I needed to walk Bingo and Nymeria and go for a run myself so I decided that after this I would go out for a run and then call Nicky and see if she wanted to go shopping.
