The shop was quiet and I guessed not many people had heard the news or hadn’t been able to get here, but loyal shop owner, “Kevin,” I read with a smile, had stayed open.

“What can I help you with?” he asked as I pulled the sledge into the shop. Nymeria stayed in the harness and sat down while I pulled a trolley out.

“I’m just getting a few things,” I say with a smile. He nodded back and sat down behind the counter again while I ran through the empty aisles in search of what I needed. I grabbed hold of a massive pack of batteries and grabbed two large torches remembering how mum had forgotten to get a torch until a week after an earthquake had shaken Christchurch where we lived. Dad had been mortified when I told him and I didn’t even want to think what the step mum had thought. I grabbed six large long life bottles of milk and nearly emptied the chocolate shelf grabbing four large bars of it and then I headed over to the fruit section and got two bags of apples and indulged in a bag of plums. “What now?” I whisper and looked down on the list.  Medical stuff, I nodded my head and grabbed some more bandages and plasters. I got some duct tape and beer along with bourbon and coke throwing them in the trolley. I also reached out and got three packets of chips on my way to the counter. Nymeria let out a whine and lifted her head when I came to a stop and Kevin started to place the stuff into bags.

“I’ll walk then,” I tell her and she let out a bark. I poked my tongue out at her tapped my foot to the song that was just ending. A weather report came up as soon as it finished and Kevin paused to turn it up.

“There has been and Official weather warning concerning the blizzards that are forming around London and disaster expert Richard Chole had this to say,” The lady stopped speaking and a man’s voice followed,

“All I can recommend is making sure you have lots of warm clothes and blankets and be prepared for an electrical shortage…”

“Shit! I’ll be a moment!” I say and dashed off to get the gas cylinders and matches.

“… Also to stay indoors and keep in contact with your neighbours if need be. Town halls and local churches may be open so check out their websites to see if you can stay there if need be…” He was cut off as the lady came back to speak,

“We have more information on our website including a list of town halls available for families and anyone concerned with staying at their home…” Kevin turned it down and shook his head.

“I’ll be sleeping here with me gun of mine, knowing it ‘omeone will give a go robbing and looting,” he said and ran his hand over the lack of hair on his head. Kevin was an older man with a hunched back and freckled face. I smiled at his words and he kept scanning and packing, I bent down and started to load the groceries into the sledge and to my word toward Nymeria I walked home… All four blocks.
