Liam POV
"Calm down, mi love. It's okay," Niall murmured as he wrapped his hands around Essie, setting his head on top of her burgundy hair.
"H-How ca-an I be okay w-when they won't even l-let me see h-her," Essie stuttered through her tears, burying her face in his chest.
I looked away, my eyes watering as I finished conversating with my godfather, Principle Feddler, as he reassured our clearance for us missing the rest of the school day.
I hung up and sighed, sitting up in the hospital chair. Niall shot his eyes at me, curious.
"We're good," I reassured him, looking around the empty hallway. I shouldn't even be here; Amanda is going to kill me... And the tournament is two weeks away.
I stood up, fixing my shirt as Niall watched. Essie peaked through his arm, her eyes blood shot.
"You should probably go," she hiccuped.
I nodded, grabbing Kelsey's keys from my pocket to give back to Essie; my house wasn't far from here, maybe a block or two.
Niall looked at her, a silent conversation with their eyes. Then he looked back at me, pursing his lips.
"No, you need to stay," he replied harshly. I rose an eyebrow, his tone was unnecessarily aggressive.
"I'd rather get back to Amanda and see how she's doing," I huffed, passing him the keys he refused to take.
"That really is sad, Liam. You should feel ashamed," Niall scowled at me. I crossed my arms, offended.
"What is there to be ashamed of. I'm going to go see my girlfriend," I shrugged, my voice heightening.
Niall's face reddened even more, anger in his eyes as he pulled away from Essie.
"You know exactly what there is to be ashamed of, Liam. It's really an arse move to not be here for Kelsey when she needs you most. Even after everything she's done for you," he waved at where we were. What the bloody hell was he talking about? I coughed a laugh.
"Everything she's done for me? Niall, she ruined me. Ever since that damn party she's done nothing but make my life hell," I yelled now. Niall let out a slight gasp, his face in disbelief. Essie grabbed his hand, her face frantic.
"Niall, let it go. Don't, " she whispered as tears fell down her cheeks. He took a quick glance at her, but I could tell the anger got the best of him.
"Did you go fucking deaf in the parking lot, Liam? How the fuck can you not get that through your damn head?" he yelled back, leaning towards me, before Essie pulled him back.
"Niall, if she had cared so much. . Then- then why wasn't she there when I needed her most, huh? " I spat back, looking at Essie now.
"Where the fuck was Kelsey when I got my transplant, huh? What could have been more important than being there for me when I needed her? Tell me that, Essie. Tell me! " I reasoned with them angrily as I glared at Essie for her response. She looked back at me, her grimace painful as she just shook her head in disbelief.
"You don't underst-"
"Exactly, I'm not important enough. So I know damn well she isn't for me either, " I growled, throwing the keys on the chair angrily.
Niall laughed sarcastically, shaking his head as he crossed his arms.
"You just don't get it do you? You're the reason she's here," Niall scoffed, and I parted my lips, anger bubbling in my blood.
"No, Niall," Essie cried, and Niall looked at her, his face apologetic.
"Kelsey's dying, Essie," Niall's eyes watered.. and I froze, confusion setting in. Niall looked back up at me, his eyes full of disgust.
My phone vibrated, and I knew it was Amanda, but I let it sit in my pocket.
"I don't have time for this," I turned around and headed towards the exit.
"Kelsey has kidney disease, possibly kidney failure, " Niall blurted loudly, his words echoing off the wall.
I stopped from stepping forward, my heart dropping. I didn't turn back, and couldn't continue. I heard Essie's cry grow, before Niall sniffled.
"She has another kidney, she'll survive, " I yelled back, turning over my shoulder before taking a step forward. I could hear Essie begging him to stay quiet but he refused.
"That's the thing, Liam." Niall's voice cracked...
" She only has one." he finished, and I froze again, my hand stuck on the door. I turned around to look at him, bewildered at his words.
Essie was against the wall, crying into her hands.. As Niall stood there, gazing straight at me, shrugging his shoulders, giving out the truth.
" She donated her other one last year, to someone who she thought was too important to keep a grudge against," Niall finished. And I shook my head.
What?
I looked at the ground, squinting my eyes as water welled in them. I continued to shake my head. She wouldn't... She.. No.
"She donated it anonymously, so that her donor wouldn't feel bad for treating her like shit," Niall spat, and I felt my lip tremble as I pouted, trying to hold in a cry.
"So he wouldn't feel like a horrid excuse of a friend for leaving her behind, for holding a ruthless grudge on her for something she never did." he yelled now, crying.
I felt like throwing up as I thought about it all.. How horrid and cold I felt. The guilt umbearable.
"So he wouldn't feel regret when she di-"
"Niall!" I heard a faint yell as I ran to the closest trash can, throwing up whatever was in my stomach.
I turned at Niall's silence, my face red, my tears falling from my eyes as I moaned a cry.
I found Niall and Essie turned around, and I followed their gaze.
The thin figure was draped in a large hospital gown, her body so tiny in the large fabric. Her pale hand held onto an oxygen tank, the tube all over her face, wires on every part of her skin as she leaned against the door.
She refused to look at me, as the nurses tried to force her back in.
"That's enough," she murmured before letting out a cough, Niall and Essie running to her side.
She hugged them, and then lifted her gaze through their shoulders, sending me a blank look.
And in that moment, I couldn't take it, and I felt myself burst into tears, before shaking my head....
"Why didn't you tell me," I mouthed to her, before a honk outside sent me turning, and noticed it was Amanda, her face waving me to come.
I took one last glance at Kelsey, who let Essie and Niall into the room, but didn't move, and just looked at me.
Her gaze was innocent and patient, before I sighed and walked out, sliding into Amanda's car through the sudden rain.
"Is Niall okay?" Amanda asked as she looked at my tears. I gave her a confusing look, before my phone vibrated.
It was Niall.
I couldn't help but burst into tears already.. Because I knew it wasn't Niall that texted me.
"Are you okay, Liam?" Amanda's voice tried to sound concerned. I nodded.
"Just go," and she left the hospital. I shook my head, so overwhelmed with the confusion on what I should be feeling..
I took one last glance at the text, and it replayed in my mind over and over.
Because you were finally happy...
