My Only Love

Chapter 4

        Nate came out of the shower feeling slightly refreshed. He was getting ready to have dinner at Kate's place. It had been a long grueling week for Nate and he felt his fatigue catching up on him. He was just thankful it was all over what with the three big exams and the pressures at work. Even the big case they were working on was in it's last stretch. Next week would pass judgment their law firm was backing on winning. He had placed a lot of hard work on this case and to have them win was enough glory for Nate. He felt fulfilled learning so much thriving on the pressures a learning process for him knowing this would be his arsenal in the future. Two more long years he thought to himself. He sighed wishing time would move faster as he would have all his dreams at his feet.

The only thing that kept him going was seeing Kate. He prepared the cable knit sweater Kate gave him loving it so much. Just wearing it reminded Nate of her always. How thoughtful she was always worried about him. Everyday even if he was so tired he looked forward to his short visits to Kate before he went to school. It inspired him to study hard and make well inorder to give Kate a solid future, their future together.

Funny the whole week he was fending off girls. It was tiresome for Nate. Two girls were hounding him at work showing up every chance he was alone. Cornering him in the office library or in the cafeteria when he took his breaks. School was no exception. He had his locker filled with love letters from girls he barely knew. But they held no meaning to him his main focus was on Kate. He loved her hopelessly and this year was his year to really show her how much he meant those words. Nate felt all his bones ache, his eyes were having a hard time keeping open but he had a smile on his face as he got dressed humming to himself feeling excited to see Kate.

Later that evening Nate arrived at Kate's house with Kate's mom answering the door.

Nate always felt a warm welcome as Mrs. Peterson greeted him with a hug making him feel a part of Kate's family. Mrs. Peterson was the exact replica of Kate the only difference was the color of their eyes. Her mother's was hazel whereas hers was an emerald green taking after her father.

Thanks for inviting me again Mrs. Peterson. I seem to be having dinner practically every Sunday here. he grinned. I'm getting used to it.

You're always welcome Nate. she smiled looking at the young man infront of him appreciating all his efforts to please Kate.

I hope you like fruits mam. he said as he handed her a fruit basket filled with an assortment of fruits in a wicker basket.

Mrs. Peterson smiled at Nate fondly. You're so thoughtful Nate.

Nate suddenly felt shy. She was like a second mother to him. He had genuine care for Kate's mom and it was all kindness she showed him in return.

Kate's in the kitchen. She insisted on cooking today. Wanted to show off. It's Chinese Food today! she exclaimed.

Nate grinned. Can't wait to taste it. It's probably burned all over.

Nate teased for Kate to hear. But he was really pleased that Kate took all the trouble to cook dinner for him. She was indeed going to make a great wife. Burnt dinner or not.

I heard that. Kate grumbled. Hmmph it taste's great and I won't let you eat any of it. Go back home she pouted teasingly.

Nate laughed instead. Then I take back every word. Can't afford to offend the cook especially if she's really a pretty cook. His gaze sweeping over Kate admiring her yellow floral dress accenting her curves and the color brought out the golden flecks of her hair. She was always breath taking to Nate and tonight was no exception.
