Nate hurriedly gathered his research material from the Harvard Legal Library. He just had enough time to gather all the facts for the case his boss Steve Connelly was working on. It was almost lunch time and he was in a rush. Kate called him yesterday night saying she was visiting him today. He still had that same feeling uptight and excited at the thought of seeing Kate. His boss Connelly was on leave so he was free to do as he pleased except he still had loads of work to do. He was finishing up.As coming next month he would be working for the Senior Partners of the firm. A step up making him Senior Legal Assistant handling high profile court hearings with more interaction with the clients. Getting the feel of almost being a certified lawyer. Another plus was the hefty raise that went with it. It would be a dream come true for Nate. Steve Connelly had indeed kept his promise. Giving him glowing recommendations to the Senior Partners.
Nate got into his jeep practically shoving all his stuff. He didn't want to miss Kate's visit. The roads were jammed. Traffic was tight as he impatiently tapped on the hand wheel of his jeep feeling exasperated. Damn traffic! He cursed inwardly. His thoughts were on Kate. He missed her terribly. It had been almost two weeks ever since the affair in Ryan's house. The events still fresh in his mind. He needed time to think and be alone. As such Nate had stopped coming over Sundays. Making up excuses that he was working weekends and couldn't make it. Knowing Kate he saw through his feeble explanations.Nate still felt the realization of things. How contrasting Ryan and his life were. He felt like a nothing compared to him. Filled with all sorts of insecurities battling inside himself.
He felt inferior towards Richie Rich. He knew he could not compete with all his wealth. That two weeks gave him time to think about what he really wanted in his life and he wanted Kate. He loved her far too deeply to give up on her so easily. He owed to himself to know where he really stood with her. This time even if he had to open up his heart raw and to be prepared for the inevitable. That risk was worth taking. Nate knew he was not going to give up Kate without a fight.
Nate had an idea on the purpose of Kate's visit. Her birthday was coming up next Friday. He was hoping he could be alone with her just the two of them. It was the perfect timing to finally open up his heart after all these years. He had already gotten her his presents. One was a leather hand bag from Michael Korrs that he knew she would get to use at work. The other was something that was handcrafted. More personalized. He had chanced upon it in a curio shop as he was searching for the perfect gift. One look at it and Nate instantly knew it was something he wanted to give Kate. A keepsake. He had to place his order two weeks in advance. He could just imagine how Kate would feel when she saw it. He knew it would hold meaning to her. Nateknew it could never compare to all the expensive gifts she would receive from Ryan but that was the best he could do to make it special.
Finally he escaped the traffic looking at his watch. He had made it right on time. Feeling exhilarated and excited to see Kate as he hurriedly stuffed the research documents in his bag as heentered his office building.
Mark Costner his best friend was busily typing on the computer as he entered glancing at him as he grinned.
You look all wound up buddy. He remarked eyeing him. Nate seemed uptight and excited. He knew only one reason. Kate was probably visiting him in the office.
Kate's coming right? You only act this way when you're excited about something.
Nate grinned back giving him a dimpled smile. Right you are buddy. Perfect timing. Connelly's not around. I can have a really long lunch.
Mark laughed surveying his friend as he was checking himself out in the wall mirror. Some things never changed in Nate. His buddy was always concernedabout his appearance when he saw Kate.
