Nate still felt down in the dumps. It had been almost a week and still no call from Kate. It seem she didn't mind at all that she had hurt him. She was known to Nate for her high pride even if she was in the wrong sometimes. It was happening right now in their fight of theirs. She was not also admitting her fault. What did he expect that Kate would come grovelling to him. That will be the day.
He was neglecting himself lately, not eating right and losing weight. He even hadn't shaved in a week a growth of beard already in his face. His clothes rumpled as if he just came out of bed. He just didn't have the strength or zest for that matter. He was also functioning like a zombie at school and at work not feeling anything. But in spite of his depression over his fight with Kate, he had done really well in his exams. He was still on top of his class. One which made Nate proud of himself. Even his work was doing well. Still he kept calibre performance even if Steve Connelly his boss was slave driving him and constantly breathing down his neck.
Even the girls at school and at work didn't seem to stop hounding him much to Nate's dismay. His grundgie look making it seem even a turn on to these girls. Showing up when he would least expect it, flaunting themselves at him and even waiting by his locker at the halls in Harvard. Asking help for assignments. It drove Nate crazy making him more irritable than he already was. He wasn't interested in any of them. All he wanted was to have Kate back. It was only Kate that mattered to him. How they would patch up Nate had no idea, but he was willing to swallow whatever pride he had left for Kate even if he knew it was her fault.
Mark Costner came into the room where he was working. Mark was his best friend dating back through their college days where they were taking Business Management courses. Nate wanted to continue on to law while Mark got side tracked and decided to go to para legal work instead. He was a good diligent guy who also loved the night life, loved to party and work hard. But beyond his carefree attitude, he was a tested and tried friend that Nate valued.
As usual both of them were up to the neck with work. New important cases were coming in and it was the start of a hectic Monday.
The master wants you he said. Be prepared he's not in a good mood again. Practically grumbled when I gave him the report of all our pending cases.
Not again! Nate groaned. What does he want this time? You know he's been breathing down my neck the past week. Noticing this, noticing that. Revise this and that.
Mark agreed. Beats me what he wants from you. Maybe it makes his day to scold you again like what he did last week. Good luck Nate you'll need it.
Nate felt his head hurt out of sheer pressure. There was not a day Connely reprimanded him. It was like he found satisfaction in seeing his para legals squirm with him in particular. He hasn't made senior partner yet and still he acted like a pompous ass. Even more so if he did. But Nate never did get intimidated by Connely. He just acted as if he never heard a word he said. Ignore him. That was his style and he knew it irritated his boss.
Nate equipped himself. He was organized in his work. He never wanted to be caught unprepared. Just as he entered his room bracing himself for what was to come.
You wanted me sir. He said as he cleared his throat for emphasis. Another thing with Connely he never offered a chair to his para legals. So they could only stand up in front of him like wooden statues as he would start his lecturing.
Nate had been the brunt of most of that. As he was doing to him right now. Connely was looking at him up and down taking in his dishevelled appearance. From the thick growth of beard surrounding his face to the crooked tie Nate hurriedly fixed as he rushed to work and the suit which he failed to iron. He knew what was coming and judging from Connely's look of disgust at his appearance. It was going to be a long lecture for him.
