Wednesday. It was the greatest major foul up day for Nate. One of the top cases he was assisting Steve Connelly his boss was going to trial on Friday. A highly controversial murder case involving really rich people. He was about to compile all the documents he had worked so hard for two weeks to submit to Connelly. When he searched his files he came out with nothing only with the neon sign of a virus warning. Damn to hell. Gone in just one sweep. The most stupid thing about it was that he forgot to back up his files and all hell broke loose from there.
That moment Nate just stood there arms rigid while he gotbawled out by Connelly. His yells penetrating every damn wall of the 14th floor where he worked. Everyone was silent making his yells at him double the sound it was making. His eardrums were hurting and his splitting headache made the feeling even worst. He was silent as he called him stupid, irresponsible and other God forsaken names.
He was silent all through it all as he yelled at him further. What else was he supposed to do but grin and bear it. Yes, he fouled up but he didn't deserve all these berating and humiliation. With the volume of Connelly's yells echoing throughout the office he knew he would be the talk of every person in the law firm. Damn shitty day. He focused his eyes on the ceiling instead trying to zone him out. It would surely be an agony for him reproducing what he had worked so hard for but he was going to produce those documents even if it killed him.
Steve Connelly's anger stillhell bent as he continued berating him as if there was no tomorrow. Any person would crumble at the intimidating sight of him but not Nate. He would not give him the benefit nor the satisfaction of seeing the way he belittled him affect him. He just zoned him out as if he didn't exist or hear anything. He wasn't himself lately the timein Harvard with Kate still fresh on his mind. The sound of Kate saying I love you to Ryan sickened him making him realize how much she loved him. While the harsh words of Amanda continuously haunted him.Sharing. That was her exact words to him. He was sharing Kate and was getting the left over crumbs of her affection.
He was also sticking to his promise of her ground rules. He had refrained from any physical contact with Kate. Maybe also out of male pride. He felt rejected. Kate had made it clear to him. But it was agony for him. Nate missed the affection they shared. The stolen kisses. The hugs that were always a part of them. He had to pull all restraint to control his emotions whenever Kate was near. But deep inside he felt empty that gnawing feeling of loneliness.
The greatest fear that was also nagging at him was rejection. What if Kate rejected him? Didn't feel the same way. What now? What will happen to him? He had nightmares at the mere thought of it. But this time he was dead set on spilling out all his heart to her. He was not going to let this fear of rejection overtake him. He had waited far too long.
His thoughts were interrupted when Connelly's sharp eyes looked directly at him noticing how he was ignoring him and thinking of something else.
Porter! he snapped. Have you anything to say for yourself. Knowing you you have deliberately ignored everything I said. Or do you want me to ask you to repeat everything I said word for word.
His tone was challenging him. Connelly noticed Nate zoning him out just standing there but not giving a god damn. Let him yell for all he cared. That was Nate Porter's attitude.
Nate looked at him directly his gaze never faltering filled with equal disdain. He was not going to buckle or crumble at the domineering look of him.
Your words are crystal clear sir and about 30 other people in this floor can replay every single curse and yell you gave me.
Connelly could not help but smile to himself. This Nate Porter in front him had guts. Others would have fainted or better yet cried in front of him at the barrage of curses and angry words he had given him. But he just stood there silent not saying a word. Connelly knew his mind was elsewhere. Some part of him felt guilty for coming down so hard on him. People make mistakes. Nate was no exception even how brilliant he was. He was still his best paralegal. His abilities never seized to amaze him. He knew with this foul up Nate would stretch heaven and earth just to produce what they needed for the case.
