Nate felt really tired it had been a long week. Juggling his work as a para legal and data encoder coupled with his law classes in the evening were a real killer. What with the constant studying and terror professors that hounded his everyday regimen. But he had no right to complain about the long hours of studying or that he had minimum sleep everyday. He had thrived on these challenges like the pressures and intricacies of it all. Studying Law was life itself for him.

Ever since he could remember it was his lifelong dream to become a lawyer. He felt the excitement of wanting to crack an important case or defending the common good. The arguments and the battles altogether. That's why he was sticking to his job at Taylor and Sachs' Law Offices, a prestigious law firm in Boston, but with meager pay. But every work week gave him the experience he needed researching on various cases, sometimes pressuring and nerve wracking. Patiently gathering facts in every detail. He felt the rush of adrenaline come to him and it was well worth the meager pay for the experience was worthwhile and never could be repaid by money. The additional job as data encoder helped ease his financial worries but by the end of every work day he was bone tired. He needed the money. He had no choice.

Nate was thankful though for the blessings God has given him such as his full scholarship at Harvard Law School. He had worked all his life for this moment. Through his pure determination he had  outnumbered all one hundred of his contenders. He could only thank his lucky stars that God gave him the opportunity to fulfill his dreams at a very renowned university.

Life hadn't been easy for Nate, He lost his father at a very young age not really knowing him. His mother who had not finished school was forced to work in order for them to survive. She only had one thing she did well and that was singing. She became a night club singer working every night to support them. She tried to fend off male suitors but they kept on hounding her.

There came Stepfather #1, and that was how life for Nate started to become a nightmare. His mother married a drunk who in the beginning appeared to be a saint but turned out to be the worst animal. Stepfather #1 love to hit and and hit really well. As a little boy he was the witness to the black eyes and bruised body of her mother. He was such a little boy then trying to act like a man the best he could. It got so bad that at the age of 8 years old got a knife and almost stabbed his stepfather to death.

Nate felt a lump on his throat as he remembered those years. It was just his fierce love for his mother that kept him going. Making him more mature and willed him to be strong even as a little boy. But his mother never learned and again Stepfather #2 entered their life and he was the worst of them all. He took pleasure in lording over them. He was a masochist who took pleasure in beating him up simply just to torment and make life miserable for Nate. He was only ten years old at that time as he suffered every abuse possible in his hands. His mother seeing him filled with welts and bruises all over his body awakened his mother to fight for him this time. She feared him but her weakness got the better of her as she could hear his cries for help but never really lifting a finger to help him. Nate felt so alone in his suffering and as the abuse became more and more frequent, it gave his mother the strength to finally stop his atrocity. That fateful night Nate will never forget as his mother threatened his stepfather at gunpoint and almost killed him. It was the last they had ever heard of him.

But Nate never lost hope that one day they would be happy and be a family. Nate finally got his wish when her mother met Stan Miller. He was a regular client at the club because of her mother. He was a shy, very decent man and liked his mother very much. Nate knew then that God had finally answered his prayers. His mother married Stan and it was the best decision of her life.
