Things went back to the usual routine after the Harvard affair. But Kate noticed the significant change in Nate. As if he was weighed down with something which she felt he could not even confide to her. He still came around Sundays still being sweet and thoughtful still showing how much that day meant to him but his actions were restrained. Gone were the affectionate hugs or stolen kisses he always tried to do whenever they were alone. Whenever he would forget himself he would quickly stop with a sad look on his face which usually cause an awkward moment between them. She felt guilt struck her knowing she had laid down the rules. But deep inside she missed what they had before. Nate was naturally affectionate but this time he was abiding with his word. The rules she hated. But she was given no choice she had Ryan now. Things were better off remaining that way. But in her dreams it was always Nate kissing her never Ryan and she would awaken feeling warm all over. Her pulse racing with very mixed emotions that only Nate awakened.

She was in debate with her mother. The one track mind she seemed to be having. Next week was the birthday of Ryan's mother. It was a day of meeting the parents. A day where part of her was excited and dreaded at the same time. Ryan was serious about this invitation there was no saying no to him.

But Mom that's too much to ask from Nate. What's he going to be my chaperone? C'mon I'm almost 23 years old I can handle myself.

No buts if you intend to go to that affair of Ryan's I want Nate along with you. You are meeting Ryan's family. You don't know what they're like. They might be some snotty snobbish family knowing how rich they are and at least Nate is there to protect you.

Is Ryan like that? He never is. You can see how humble and down to earth he is in so many ways. She argued. What will Nate say mom? He even has to tag along when in fact he dislikes Ryan. Ryan feels the same way.

Ryan isn't. But you'll never know about his family. I've been telling you time and again why choose someone else when you have Nate who practically worships the ground you walk on and then before I know it you have a boyfriend and you just dropped Nate. The poor boy. You have eyes Kate. That boy has loved you for so many years now.

Mom I have Ryan now. Nate and I are only friends. She said feeling troubled. The realization coming from her mom that Nate loved her for years now was indeed true. She did have eyes and one look at Nate's ocean blue eyes she knew instantly what he felt. For years she was just trying hard to evade it. Always with the notion that Love complicates friendship.

She gave a sigh. I won't allow you unless you have Nate with you. And if you have set your sights on going to that affair with Ryan. It's best you tell Nate soon enough. You don't expect me to tell him but you yourself.

Kate groaned out loud. You are being unreasonable mom. You know Ryan will always be my side the whole night. It's not as if his family will trample me.

But her Mom met her retorts with deaf ears. My decision is final. Go ask Nate. He can never deny you. she said with a firm resolve. That boy will do anything for you.

I'll ask him but it's asking too much. You should be aware of that Mom. A person can only take as much.

But her pleas were met with deaf ears. As far as her mother was concerned if she was so dead set in going to Ryan's affair. Nate had to be there or not go at all.

It would be asking too much of Nate. Knowing the love he felt for her. He would see everything. It was like putting salt into a wound that would cut deeper and deeper through Nate. But what choice did she have. She could not deny Ryan's request it meant so much to him. He asked for so little. Some part of her was also excited in meeting his family.
