Nate was in the office looking at the clock. It was almost 8:30 am and he needed to make his escape if he wanted to surprise Kate and make it to her presentation on time. Steve Connelly his boss, a lawyer in his mid- forties was not a man you could easily bluff your way into. He had a very suspicious mind that of a lawyer. Nate felt he even had that extra perception when he wanted to make his escape from the office. A feat he seems to be accomplishing regularly and getting away with it. He could just imagine how touched Kate will be that he had even come just to see her. This kept Nate inspired to find the perfect plan to make his escape.

Nate needed his buddy at work Mark Costner to back him up in his work just in case there were urgent tasks. He needed to be gone for at least 3 hours. He also had to produce results lest his boss would start to yell at him shaking the entire law office if he found out he just wanted to see Kate.

Please. Please I'll make it up to you I promise. You can give me the toughest assignments you have and I'll do everything no questions asked.

Mark could only shake his head when Nate wanted something there was no deterring him. He felt it had something to do with Kate again. He knew how hopelessly in love Nate was with Kate Peterson his best friend and nothing can stop this guy whenever she was concerned.

Alright I'll cover for you but make sure you get Connelly's permission first. You know how tough he is on you. Let's see you get through him with whatever excuse you have. And good luck you'll need it buddy.

Nate sighed inwardly. Connelly was a hard one to beat. Even as a boss he was a difficult person to deal with. A perfectionist he was constantly finding fault in his work even if everything was already done to perfection. He was also tough on him giving him the hardest assignments opinions and briefs that were difficult to write. But what was good about Connelly was he gave praise when a job was well done. Nate earned those praises showing his boss that he was not afraid of hard work. That he had the drive and the capability of being a good lawyer someday. Deep inside Nate knew he had earned his respect even if he rarely showed it.

It was now or never Nate thought as he knocked on Steve Connelly's door. He was nervous deep inside but he had to look convincing and confidence was a must. He even looked as if he was in a bad mood which made it even more difficult for him.

He cleared his throat then. Sir I need your permission to go to the Harvard library I need some research material to complete the assignment you assigned. There's also a newspaper article I have to look into to help our case.

Steve Connelly knew what Nate Porter was up to he wanted to see his girl again. His best friend who he was so deeply in love with. He knew about the gossip around the office. He smiled inwardly looking at the confident young man infront of him. He was a hard worker too with a brilliant mind even at an early age. He knew this boy would make a brilliant lawyer someday and be amongst them making a name for himself. But no matter how strict he was with him some things he would allow but with a price.

And what would that be Nate? he asked appearing suspicious just to see how this young man would react.

Nate grinned. It was in the bag he thought. You'll see later sir you won't be sorry. I'll give you the best argument yet.

Alright.but make sure it's worth it Nate or you better be prepared me yelling at you for everyone to hear. Do you understand me?

Nate gulped but not easily intimidated. I'll make sure it's worth our time sir. I'll have it at your desk later. Thank you God he said to himself.
