Chapter 48

Kate was on pins and needles as he waited for Nate. One part of her was having anxieties on how his reaction would be like to be a chaperone to her and Ryan. The other part was what she overheard the receptionist talking to him and saying if he was alright and that they were for him. What did Nate get himself into? Was it about work? Did he lose his job? Those thoughts nagged at her.

Her thoughts were interrupted when Nate arrived in the lobby. He looked harassed. Haggard even. His hair looked as if it was ran thorough by his hands in exasperation. His ocean blue eyes looked bloodshot. But his smile was still there for her no matter how stressed he looked. That boyish charming smile with the killer dimples that Kate loved so much.

She came to him worry in his eyes as he approached her and held her hand looking at her filled with tenderness. His ocean blue eyes becoming alive and looked happy to see her.

Nate what happened? Is everything okay? She asked at once concern etched in her face.

He just smiled. You're a sight for sore eyes you know. I just had a very rotten day and I'm happy you're here. He said quietly holding her hand tightly into his own.

He motioned for the receptionist that they were going out for lunch as they both left the building.

They talked lightly but Kate could see that there was more to this incident and she would ask Nate to open up to her whether he would like it or not. He was out of it and it showed. Worry was in his face.

They both decided that they just wanted to take coffee and some sandwiches. They were both not hungry as a lot was going on in their minds. This time she was direct as she questioned him.

Nate what happened at work? I couldn't help but overhear your conversation with your receptionist. And I know it's no small thing? Did you lose your job? Tell me Nate. she asked with determination.

He sighed. It's been a shitty day Kate. We were working on this important case. I compiled the pleadings, documents needed all the facts in the case. Stored it in my computer at work. But failed to back up my files. And they're all gone Kate. A virus destroyed all the files. Everything I've worked hard for in the past two weeks. Without a trace. He said bleakly.

The worst part of it was that my boss Connelly went raging mad. How he yelled at me Kate. Calling me irresponsible and stupid. You can just imagine how loud it was. As he berated me. I felt as if my eardrums would split. He sighed and everyone heard it Kate. I just stood there in front of him silent ignoring him totally. I know I fouled up but that doesn't give him the right to humiliate me. But I'm going to produce those documents even if I have to slave two days with no sleep just to get it and shove it up his ass.

Oh Nate. Please try to calm down and relax. We all mistakes even I know you rarely don't. Kate said trying her best to make it better as she held his hand.

Can't you have a computer technician retrieve it? It can be in your hard drive. The computer itself. That happened to my officemate and they practically had to check out the hard drive that stores all the data. And they found it Nate. Cause even if the virus deleted it the computer usually has a place where it can still restore all data.

Nate looked at Kate contemplating. She can be right about that. Kate just gave him the best darn idea to save his ass. It was worth a try. His memory traced the same incident that happened to his officemate last year. And it worked. He would be damn lucky if it worked for him too. Nate felt this was the ultimate solution. Thank God for Kate.
