**Chapter 18**
It's been almost two months since Delilah watched Nicoletta tumble down the bleachers. Rumors have been floating around the school that she died since she hasn't been at school. Nicoletta's mother, Arabella said she isn't aloud to leave the hospital yet and can't have visitors yet.
Cassandra was driving Kassidi, Delilah, and Brighton all to the hospital though since today was the given day that Nicoletta could have visitors for the first time.
Delilah sat in the back seat and watched out the window impatiently. Brighton was next to her playing with his fingers and biting his bottom lip. Onah sat in his booster seat by the window next to Brighton. Kassidi sat in the front seat, quiet as usuall. She hasn't said much to Delilah recently. She sits with her and Zach at lunch but her and Wyatt are always quiet.
The hospital building nears and Delilah starts to get fidgety. Brighton sucks on his lip as he made it bleed. Kassidi taps her fingers on the door and stares out the window.
Cassandra doesn't even park the car. She stops outside the front doors and lets them all out except for Onah.
All three of them run to the doors and pull them open. They walk quickly to the front desk with a darker colored lady with the curliest black hair ever.
"May I help you?" She asks in an accent Delilah can't place.
"Were here to see Nicoletta Shea!" Brighton says impatiently as Kassidi and Delilah stand there silently.
Delilah is beyond nervous, she doesn't know her feelings anymore. She's mad, but happy. She's nervous, but ancious. She doesn't want to see what horrible state her best friend is in, yet she can't wait to hug her and tell her how much she misses her.
"Yes, Shea," The woman at the desk says as she looks at her computer screen. "Intensive care, unit fourteen." She says and looks at them all. She points to the farthest wall to there left. "You can take the elevator up to floor two and just follow the signs from there.
The three of them practically run to the elevator and Delilah pushes the call button over and over until Brighton holds her hand.
"It's not going to come any faster if you keep pushing it." He says to her. He is a good head taller than Delilah.
The elevator dings and the silver doors open. Delilah runs in and pushes the button with a 2 on it. Kassidi and Brighton have to jump in before the doors start to close on them.
Delilah taps her foot impatiently as she watches the little dial move from floor 1 to floor 2. It's takes a whole five seconds for the doors to open again and Delilah was pushing through them before they were even open all the way.
They followed the signs to the room number 14 written on a black plaque with the little dots underneath for blind people.
Delilah goes to open the door but Brighton knocks before she can. They hear shuffling behind the door and they wait. The knob starts to slowly turn and they all stare at it.
The door slowly opens to a dark room and a small little figure appears in front of them.
Delilah recognizes the long blond hair pulled into a loose ponytail and resting on her left sholder.
"Nikki." Delilah whispers.
The figure smiles at her smally.
Then Delilah noticed the crutches she rests on and the big white cast around her right leg.
"Go sit down right now!" Delilah commands loudly.
The figure looks surprised and slowly turns around and wobbles away. Delilah gulps before pushing the door open more and walking in.
Nicoletta lays back down on the bed and flips a switch on the bed. The lights in the room all turn on and Delilah stares at her.
Nicoletta is in a fuzzy pair of night shorts with Zebra print on them and a huge white tank top on. Her bony shoulders look so ruff and her thin neck looks like it can barely keep her head up. Her arms are partially crossed as they rest on her stomach. She is even smaller than when they first met two years ago.
"What's happened to you Nikki?" Kassidi asks as she stands at the foot of Nicoletta's bed.
"You look like a ghost." Brighton says.
Nicoletta does look like a ghost. Her small frail body is so pale you could practically see through her.
"I-I," Nicoletta tries and coughs. "I starved myself." She says in a raspy voice. "But my baby saved my life."
Delilah chokes over air. "What?" She looks at Brighton standing next to her. "What did she say?"
Brighton shakes his head. "Did you say your baby saved your life?"
Nicoletta nods her head and winces like the movement hurts her.
"Baby?" Kassidi asks.
"Yes, baby," Nicoletta says to them all. She looks at each of them separately for a few seconds before looking at her stomach. "I'm pregnant. And if it wasn't for my unborn baby then I probably still wouldn't have eaten."
"With who's baby?" Brighton asks and bites his bottom lip again.
"Landon Butch." She says.
"Are you sure it's his?" Brighton asks. He looks hurt as he asks it.
Nicoletta glares at him. "Of course it's his. Do you think I sleep around with every guy I see?" She hisses towards him.
"Obviously not all!" He spits back at her.
She looks shocked and then her expression changes so quickly that she looks like she is going to burst out in tears.
Brighton grabs her hand and holds it gently. Her fingers are so bony and small against his.
"I'm sorry Nicoletta." He says and kisses her hand. "I didn't mean that."
Nicoletta stokes his face with her free hand. Her bony fingers look like they will brake at the slightest touch.
"It's okay Brighton." She says to him and he smiles up at her crookedly. "I forgive you."
They sat there in an awkward silence for what felt like hours.
"I got a boyfriend." Delilah says after a long minute. Nicoletta looks up at her and smiles.
"Really, who?" She asks.
"Zach Thompson. The guy from my first hour Psychology class."
"That's great Delilah!" Nicoletta says happily. She looks truly happy.
"I really like him. I think I'll stay with him for a while."
"You mean you won't dump him in a month when you get tired of him." Kassidi says.
Delilah looks at her and smiles. "Actually we've been dating for a month already. So no." Delilah says to Kassidi. "I actually really like him. And he is so interesting, how could I ever get bored with him?" She looks at Nicoletta. "He keeps me guessing." She smiles.
"I'm happy for you Delilah, I really am." Nicoletta says. She looks at Kassidi still at the foot of the bed. "How about you Kass, anything interesting happen while I was gone?"
Kassidi's eyes start to water and she runs to the other free side of Nicoletta's bed. Tears stream down her face.
"I-I'm with you Nicoletta." She cries.
