Addie trailed over to me after a few minutes, a paper in her hand.
"Come on."
I cross my legs.
"Pardon?"
She put the paper in my face.
"I'm bailing you out."
I laughed, causing Oak to jump back a little.
"Ha! No."
I say bitterly.
"I'm confused as to why you're even allowed to be bailed at all."
She takes a deep breath in.
"I'm trying to help you, Charlotte."
I take a mocking deep breath in, mimicking her.
"I'm trying to help you, Addie."
I say, copying her tone of voice.
Oak balls his hands into fists.
She slaps his arm.
"Hit me again, Treeman. I won't fuss this time."
I sneer, standing up.
The girl at the counter leaves to get the chief or whoever the hell deals with this shit.
Addie yells at Oak to stand outside.
When he's gone, she turns back to me.
"Listen here. I'm taking you back to New York. We are going to beg for your job back, find your mess of a husband, clear up all this prison shit, and knock some sense into you."
She reaches for my hand, but I stealthily put it in my pocket.
I sigh.
"I'm trying to put back the pieces of what I broke. You can help by going home and forgetting about me."
She sighs, defeat settling into the air.
"Fine. Just do me a favor?..."
She looks up at me, her eyes starting to glisten.
I nod, wanting to leave immediately.
"Be good to yourself..."
And with that, I lost my best friend.
Again.
