The voices in my ear were getting louder to the point that I couldn't physically hear the world around me.
Darren got off the phone with someone as I was stirring a pot of ingredients for brownies.
"Chris and Addie want to go on a walk in Washington Heights. Chris said is was for 'old times sake'."
I looked up from my bowl.
"What?"
I asked, a little too loudly.
He raised an eyebrow and repeated himself.
I nodded.
His head cocks when he hears what I'm listening to.
"What are you listening to?"
My face goes red, but I focus on the brownies.
"A new thing I found."
I didn't lie.
I don't hear the next thing he says over the constant noise in my ears.
He waves a hand in my face.
I notice the music is off.
"What?"
He leans back in his chair and repeats himself again.
"Come get dressed. We are meeting Addie and Chris in an hour in Times Square."
I nod and put my bowl in the fridge.
The closet door opens with a crash!
I jump back, but mostly ignore it and dig through the clothes.
Red skirt. White shirt.
Black jeans. White shirt. Blue jacket.
Red shirt. Black jeans.
Colors.
Addie has brands and perfect names set aside for everything she uses and wears.
I use colors.
Darren calls for me from the living room.
I roll my eyes and grab black jeans, a red shirt, a black leather jacket, and my red Vans.
I stand up too quickly from tying my shoes and fall back onto the bed.
Slower this time idiot.
I slowly stand back up and join Darren in the living room.
He looks at my outfit and nods.
"Good choice."
It wasn't mine.

I spot Addie and Chris under the Hamilton sign.
Addie has her dog with her.
And Usher.
I bend down and pet the pit bull.
Usher sneezes.
"Bless you, Usher."
Darren says, giggling and linking his arm in mine.
I tense up a bit but let it go.
Addie smiles at me.
Chris smiles at Addie.
Darren smiles at me then the dog.
We stay silent.
I stare at the ground.
A half-eaten apple lays at my feet.
"I think we need to go this way."
Chris finally says, pointing to where Darren and I came from.
We nod and he leads the way, holding onto Addie the whole way.
