"I actually can't believe they're letting you walk free. You're basically a murderer!"
I adjusted my grip on the subway pole.
"Attempted. Not successful."
A girl, about my age, sitting in the seat next to where I'm standing is watching something on her phone.
I sneakily lean and peak over her shoulder.
The girl is smiling down at her screen.
It's Renee, Pippa, and Addie dancing and singing to Candy Store.
I tapped her shoulder.
"E-Excuse me?"
She presses the pause button and stares up at me, her jaw dropping and hanging agape.
Her eyes widen and she shoots up from her seat.
She gives me a once-over with huge eyes.
I point to the device in her hand.
"What are you watching?"
She snaps her attention back to the phone.
"O-Oh! Y-Yeah...the Hamilton casts did a gun v-violence thing the other day and I didn't get to see it live so I'm w-watching it on Y-YouTube."
I smiled at her nervous stutter.
She pointed at me.
"Y-You're Charlotte Spe- oh!- Bara! Sorry."
She fiddled with her earbuds.
I began to get a closer look at the girl.
She looked just like....
Her hand flew out in front of her.
"M-My name's Katherine....but you can't call me Katie."
Tears formed in a thin line around my eyes.
Her eyes opened even wider.
"O-Oh my gosh I'm so sorry! I forgot about-UG I'm such a nitwit!"
The girl slapped her forehead with the palm of her hand.
I blinked away the liquid from my eyes, reaching my hand out to touch her arm.
"No! You're fine. It's a beautiful name."
I say, smiling.
She directs her attention back to the video.
"Why weren't you a part of this?"
My muscles tensed up.
I searched frantically for something to say.
"I was here. I am taking a break from New York."
I say calmly, smiling still.
She nods.
"I understand."
The bus shrieks to a halt.
She looks at the sign.
"Ah man! This is my stop! Crap. It was so wonderful meeting you."
She gathered her things and turned to the door.
"Really...you don't know how many people you inspire...even on the other side of the nation."
She squeezed her bag tightly to her chest and hopped off the train, out of view.
