48 - Surprises & Embarrassment

Soon enough, rather too soon, the last day came around. I was awake since early in the morning, and so was Niall. Both of us knew what was coming, and I did not know about him, but I had been mentally preparing myself for this day –not that it had worked, though. But no matter what, I knew we were determined to make the most of this day, because tomorrow by this time he would be gone.

“Good morning, Nialler.”

“Good morning, Kay.”

We both stretched, trying not to think about it being our last day together. But there was a certain tension in the air; I could sense it all too well.

He scooped over and kissed my forehead. I smiled but remembered not to get too close to him. Morning breath was not one of my best attributes and he did not have to know that the last day we would be together. I wanted him to leave with a good impression of me.

“How are you feeling today?” he asked as he got out of the bed. I was sure he could not do that, stay the night and sleep in the bed with me, but somehow he had stayed here the two days I had been interned. Guess pop star benefits did come handy at times.

“Great,” I replied as I moved around amongst the white blanket that warmed one up just enough. I sat on the edge of the bed, placing my right foot onto the ground first and then my left, the way I always did and that brought me so much luck. It had brought me Niall, so I guess we could say it did work its magic.

“No pain?” he inquired, looking intently at me, as if he could see right through me and tell when I was lying, which I kind of thought he could.

“No pain,” I assured him as I smiled truthfully.

“Good,” he breathed, nodding in understanding as he paced around the room anxiously, earning an odd look from me. He remained silent for a while and then proceeded to check his phone, scrunching up his face as he read something from it, and then looked at me.

“Would you like to go downstairs?” he asked trying to look unsuspicious, but he was failing miserably. I pretended like I did not notice though, for his dignity and precious man ego, so it could remain intact.

“Downstairs?” I echoed while walking up to him as I tried my best to cover my butt crack to come across through the stupid clothing I had on. I had my underwear on –because I had asked the nurse if I could-, but I still felt uncomfortable to go around showing my underwear to strangers.

“To the cafeteria,” he replied vaguely, looking away. God, he was such a terrible liar!

“Sure. But I don’t think it’s open just yet,” I rebutted, just to get to his nerves.

“It’s a hospital, it is open 24/7, darling,” he acclaimed gallantly as he wriggled his eyebrows at me.

“Okay. But hadn’t you said the food here is not good?” I questioned, not being able to contain myself from picking on him a bit.

He needed to go to a course on how to lie right away. But I played along and just pretended to try and figure out what he was trying to do. I narrowed my eyes at him, and he sucked a sharp breath in, making me bite the inside of my cheeks so I could contain my laugh.

“Kaylie, shhh,” he shushed me by placing his finger in front of my mouth. I looked down at it with a quirked up eyebrow. He pecked my lips and then got his hand on my back, to help me get out the room. Well, he surely knew how to shut me up.

We took slow but steady steps, taking in our quiet surroundings and trying as well to keep it low so we did not get in trouble –which was kind of difficult when Niall kept on whispering the lamest jokes into my ears just for the sake of it. It seemed as if he had spent too much time with Harry.
