Ilonggo Version

The new best friends are in Menggay's house when Bastian's mother calls for him. She tells him his father has arrived.

The little boy scurries home.

Menggay doesn't see him for days.

The next week, she finally sees him on the street and waves for him to sit on the curb outside her house. She fetches his gift. It's a box of lastiko she had bought along with her school supplies.

She is showing him how to make a rubber band star, when a man approaches them. It's Bastian's father, the Kapitan.

He smiles and asks Menggay about ordinary things, like how old she is and where she goes to school. He asks her why she is alone. She tells him her Tatay is at work and her sisters are enrolling.

Bastian's father smells funny and talks funny. His eyes are red and he sways when he stands.

He reaches out his hand and touches Menggay's arm, up and down, telling her how grateful he is that Bastian has a friend.

Just then, she hears her Manong RJ close his gate while dribbling his basketball. He is going to the court when he sees them.

"Menggay sulod." RJ orders.

"Nong?"

"Sulod sa balay."

Menggay hugs Bastian and stands up. RJ and the Kapitan talk.

Before closing the door to her house, she hears the older man laugh, asking RJ "Naabtan na na siya?"

RJ joins her inside the house that day and doesn't leave until her sisters and Tatay arrive. He talks to her Tatay alone.

She is inside her room when her Manang Coleen and Manang Colette come in. They tell her she always has to wear a bra when she steps out of the house and to always lock the gate.

That week, her Tatay's sister Tita Ruby stays with them. Her Tatay also gets a dog.
