"Kung ma-assign ko sa China, ma-upod ka sa akon?"
RJ's parents jump from their seats.
His Mama pinches him.
"Guripaton ta ka karon, RJ. Gulpi-gulpi paghambal mo. Hulata anay na makalakat kami."
His Papa leads his Mama out of the restaurant. He looks back and tells me,
"Menggay, hu-o ka na dayon ha. RJ, good luck. Mayuha guid!"
I get a funny feeling and turn to him slowly.
"RJ?"
He motions to the waiter.
"Tubig! Tubig!"
I grab his ear and twist it.
"Ako ma guripat sa imo. Ginakulba-an ko subong. Ano'ng ginahambal mo?"
RJ falls from his chair and his ears are crimson.
He lifts himself up to one knee and shows me his two hands.
On one is a loose diamond stone.
On the other, is a brochure of ring settings.
"Menggay, pakasli na ko please."
