Ilonggo Version
Menggay is in her volleyball practical test. It's her turn to to do an underhand serve.
She gets two tries. First try, the ball doesn't go over the net. She also steps beyond the service line.
RJ coaches her from the sidelines, shouting,
"Menggay! Menggay, ang linya, ang linya!" Her classmates snicker.
She serves again and the ball goes over the net, but her foot is one inch inside the line.
Her teacher still fails her.
RJ hands her water jug. While she drinks, he takes a Good Morning towel and starts to put it under the back of her wet shirt.
"Menggay, butangan ta bimpo likod mo. Basa basa ba!"
Menggay spews out the water and stomps her feet.
"Manong, kakaluhuya!"
"Menggay, basi mamasakit ka!"
She seethes.
"Indi mo ko pagtawgon nga Menggay. Ako si Maine!"
RJ's mouth hangs open.
"Ahhh. Okay. Maine. Okay. O talikod ka na, Maine."
He pulls the collar at the back of her shirt and pours in baby powder.
