Menggay has a secret. Her sisters make her cross stitch projects. They are out of town now and she has to submit a new design for H.E. in the morning.
She opens her window and whistles.
She waits for him by the gate.
RJ, in pajamas and a thin shirt, yawns as he walks inside the sala.
"Menggay? Ay, Maine?"
"Okay lang, Menggay sa balay."
"Ah, okay. Menggay?"
She shows him the crumpled Aida cloth and the jumble of thread.
"Sin-o teacher mo?"
"Si Ms. Jenny."
His eyes light up. "Favorite ako ni Ms. Jenny sa H.E."
"Manong, dapat may favorite quote."
"Sige, tulog ka na."
RJ works fast and produces even and precise double-thread stitches.
He folds the project, wraps it in Manila paper and leaves it on top of her bag.
Menggay submits it to Ms. Jenny first thing.
During class, all students go in front to show their designs.
Menggay gets a perfect grade. Her classmates grumble and roll their eyes.
RJ's favorite quote is "I ❤️ Ms. Jenny."
