It is the summer before RJ's last year and Menggay's first year in high school.
Menggay asks him to try her mango agogo. As he moves to chomp, he glances at her expectant eyes and is stunned.
She is beautiful.
His teeth go down and he tastes the saltiest icy treat. He spews it out. "D%puga! Nagpa-check ka sa mata? Asin ang ginabutang mo!"
RJ downs some water to mask his sudden thought: Menggay's growing up.
That same summer, she is in his garden with Tian. He sees the little boy hiding a wriggly worm in his pocket and jumps at the loudest poooot from Tian's buli.
As Menggay and RJ share a laugh he realizes.
Maybe Trish is right to be alarmed. Maybe her jealousy of his "just because," is justified.
