Puberty hits Menggay like placid waters on the shore. It comes quietly and gently, transforming sharp edges to soft curves. Once-bug-eyes now curve like a feline's, lined with long lashes that fan out and touch the top of her cheeks when she sleeps. Her teeth settle in nicely and she has a perfect smile. Her too-wide-lips now give her a natural pout, and puckers when she thinks. She grows her hair and it reaches her back in soft waves.
She becomes interested in clothing and makeup and, once in a while, develops a crush on one or two of her schoolmates. She asks for a camera for her birthday and uses the pictures as references for paintings. She changes her room from bubblegum pink to gradating shades of coral.
A certain kind of shyness seeps in, and her once-demanding personality transforms into a refreshing independence.
The boys who go to the court often crane their necks when they pass by the Mendoza house, wanting a glimpse of the guapa.
She calls herself Maine. Only her family and her Manong RJ can call her Menggay. She also allows her new best friend to call her by her nickname.
He just moved in the new house where her and RJ's aratiles tree used to grow.
