A/N Lima ka Tu-ig ni Menggay translates to Limang Taon ni Menggay
News of RJ's leaving spurs the boys in school to court Menggay in earnest. They give her roses, balloons and long, love letters.
She gives the roses to her sisters and the balloons to Bastian. She finds the love letters funny. She likes correcting the sentences and doodles on them.
She has two boyfriends in high school and one in freshman college. The first she breaks up with because he says only girls should garden and sew.
The second she breaks up with because they are "incompatible." Secretly, it bothers her that his dimple is on the wrong cheek.
The third breaks up with her when she wouldn't say "I love you" back.
One day, she notices a new family move into RJ's home. It dawns on her that he has really left her.
When he calls, she gets sad and doesn't talk much. But she places the pictures he sends in her scrapbook along with the laminated, pink, heart-shaped pickled ginger from the ramen restaurant.
RJ seems so very far away.
