Chapter Eleven: A Vampire and a Girl

We ran for what seemed forever, before we saw the cabin. It was slightly run down, but it was good enough to be considered habitable. When we got in, we discovered we weren’t alone. There was a girl and… a vampire. I narrow my eyes. “Who are you? What’s with the girl?” Alexander stirs.

“Hey Danica… the vampire’s name is Orpheus. Chill out will you?...The girl can explain herself…” He conveniently falls unconscious again.

The girl smiles, and I notices that she’s quite pretty, by human standards. She has shoulder length blond hair, and beautiful blue eyes. She also is quite tall. The vampire is tan, but defiantly not orange. He has green eyes and his hair is messy blond.

“Hi. I’m Summer, and this is Orpheus. However, you can just call him Orph. Nice to meet you. We, well, at least Orph, are acquaintances with Alexander. I’ve never met him though. Orph however, I think has a rather good relationship with him. They tend to talk a lot when I’m not around.” She smiles sweetly. “What’s your name?”

I sigh. “My name is Danica, and this is my brother Oreleanus. Now if you don’t mind, Alexander’s wounded, and needs medical attention.” Summer gasps, but Orph just nods.

“What kind of trouble did he get into this time?” He says with a quiet smile

“Shot by an electric lazer,” I solemnly announce.

“Ouch,” Orph replies. “I’ll see what I can do. Oh, and another thing: I don’t do dragonling OR fairy blood. So relax.” He picks up Alexander and takes him into another room. I glance worriedly after Alexander. Summer glances at me.

“So, where’d you come from?” She seemed like a good person, so I decided to trust her. For now.

“I’m Princess Danica, if you didn’t catch up with that. We’re from the Crown family in the Fairywoodlands. Where do you come from?"

"One of the human nations from the north." She states simply.

"Really? How is it up there?" I ask, interested.

She sighs. “ Fine, I guess... I’m... also half human.” She says this last part reluctantly. This I would understand well. After all, humankind doesn’t exactly favor those who are different.

“I believe you but, half human and…?” I ask with a touch of curious in my voice.

“I’m also half fairy.” She says with slight displeasure. My eyes widen. That is not a common occurrence. It’s more common for humans and elves to cross then for humans and fairies to.

“…Really? I wouldn’t have guessed…” This had caught me off guard, because most of the time, I can detect the scent of a particular individual, or a species, and be able to identify it later. It’s possible that I was confused by her human nature, and it masked the other scent.

I glanced worriedly at the room where Orph had Alexander, and I hoped he’d be alright. After all, the sooner I got done here, the sooner I could leave and never have to worry about dragonlings again. Hopefully. Of course, with our luck, that wasn’t happening.

Orph steps out of the room, and wearily sighs, and then sits on a cushioned chair. “He’ll be fine. He just needs bit of rest, and he should be ready to go in a few days.” He sighs. He looks genuinely concerned, so this Orph guy must know something about Alexander.

“So what’s the deal with Alexander? He saw this one girl Filia and went berserk and killed her. Why’d he do that? I don’t understand.” Orph looks at me, and sighs.

“I’m not sure how much I should, or rather, can say. Alexander and I are close, and I respect his desire to be left alone. What I can say, is that his cause, which I can’t tell you about, is just, Danica. I would just say this, no matter how he acts on the outside, I’m pretty sure there’s more then he’s letting on Danica. You just have to see past the illusion.” With this, Orph gets up and heads for the door. “I’m going to go get some food. I’ll be right back.” With that, he takes off, faster then the eye could follow. And left me to ponder his words.

A few hours later, and Alexander comes out of the room, slightly shaking. He suddenly stumbled, and I go to catch him. I stop short when he growled, and it was like a feral wolf’s growl. I stopped and thought to myself, what’s with him? Why does he act like that? Why? I know he hates me, but why does heput up with it? I wish I understood what was going on for once…

It would not be too far off on the road I walked, that I would find that answer I sought. And everything I thought to be true would be shaken.
