Chapter Twenty Three: The World on A Knife’s Edge

When I woke up, I quickly got dressed, putting on a formal sort of dress and quickly came downstairs to eat breakfast. Only a few minutes before the public announcement, and I did not look forward to it. Mother walks over to me, and strokes my hair.

“Sleep well last night?” She asks softly.

“Yeah, I did. I kept thinking about what Grandpa said last night, and it had me thinking.” I say, still sleepy. My mother sighs.

“Danica, now’s not the time. You need to get over to the assembly and tell the people what they should know.” I sigh.

“Yeah, I get to tell a whole bunch of people our worst enemy is back… This is going to be a long day.” I put my dishes up in the sink, and then walk out, and proceed to the assembly hall. When I arrive, I glance at all the people, at least half the city was present in the hall, and millions watching on television. This was not going to be easy. I stand into the speaker box, and ask for everyone to quiet down.

“Everyone, I have a grave announcement. Involving the strange incident a few weeks ago, the chase that occurred, we were after a dangerous individual who was part of a race we all thought dead. The dragonlings are back, alive and well.” There was an outcry at once. I raise a hand for silence.

“The individual’s name is General Alexander. From the intelligence I have obtained, he may have been promoted to second in command. However, I must urge you not to panic. Your government has this situation under control and we are working to deal with these recent events. Once we have sorted everything that happened out, we will give you more information once it is available. Thank you for your time, and we hope you understand that we have things under control.” I wave, and then leave the assembly hall. I had hoped that would be all I would have to deal with, but I can never just let my guard down that easy.

My dear friend I met on the way home decided to return. Noltandalus flew overhead, his terrifying roar ripping through the semi silent streets. Seconds later, the city lights were wiped out. I cursed. An electromagnetic roar?! Great! This is freaking fantastic! This dragon must be powerful to wipe a whole city’s power out! When the dragon saw me, he began to slowly spiral down in circles towards me. When he got rather close, he thundered, “So you assume that I was gone? That I had faded back into the azure curtains above?! No, for I merely wished to allow my enemy a chance for a proper battle. But now, feel the TRUE wrath of the Skylord, Noltandalus!!”

With that, the great sapphire dragon landed right in front of me, forcing me to engage him in a suicidal attempt to defeat him. Just another thing to add to my things I hate to do. Fighting dragons.

The dragon slowly circled, his blue eyes watching my every move. He snarled, and drew a great, earthshaking breath. Only an idiot doesn’t know what that means. He intended to blast my body with enough electricity to kill an elephant. I wasn’t going to stand still while he prepared to kill me. I activated my Earth War Fairy form and send an abandoned building crumbling down over him. The dragon, sensing danger, flew off, narrowly avoiding being smashed, then fired off one shot of electricity, which I dodged, before flying off, roaring in frustration. I breathed a sigh of relief.

“I don’t know why you’re so relieved, Crown.” Tom’s voice growls behind me. I’m not even surprised anymore.

“What do you want now, Dragonling?” I growl in irritation. I quickly turn around so he can’t get the upper hand on me. He is glaring at me, his snow white hair blowing in the wind. No, he wasn’t old, that was just his natural hair color. He had sapphire-ish eyes; I would say most sapphire dragonlings had that color. His gaze was quite murderous.

He lunged, and grasped me by the throat. “What deal did you make with him so that he wouldn’t turn you in? I know he struck a deal. Was it perchance, if you deal with the Gems, will you be our allies? Or is there something else?” He growls, while slowly crushing my throat.

I manage to choke out, “I was just helping him get to you so he could tell you about some bomb the Chromatics were going to detonate. In exchange he would get me home safely.” He narrows his eyes.

“Now why do I not believe that? Oh, that’s right. I just remembered: I’m not a total moron, fairy. Now, you can start telling me the truth, or I can get violent real quick. I suggest you…” He is interrupted abruptly by a swift snap kick to the head from my ever so wonderful mother.

“Have I mentioned recently how much I hate you?” I gag, freed from his grip. Tom snarls, but does not attempt to fight.

“Hmmph. You win this round. Don’t assume you’ll succeed in deterring my wrath a second time.” With that, he explodes in a violent blast of electricity. I sigh.

“It seems the world never ceases to be filled with people who can’t listen.” My mom checks to make sure I’m ok, then replies,

“That’s one thing I can agree with. We need to take action, before the action comes back. We need a plan, and we need one now. Tom isn’t going to wait for us to spring Alexander, so let’s get to work.” I nod sharply, and we teleport to the National Headquarters of the Military. Once there, we arrange a meeting with all high level military personal to begin preparations for a massive operation. This was going to be tricky, and we need all the help we can get. The group arrives, and I call to order the meeting. Well, here goes nothing. I begin to tell them about why we were there. I just hoped they wouldn’t give me too much trouble.
