Chapter 40: Venture into the Jaws of the Desert
I got out of the giant temple gates, and stood and beheld a great vast wasteland. So this is the scope of the Chaotic Desert, the only Desert-Continent in existence. The endless white stood blazingly apparent against the rich blue sky, with mountainous sand dunes forming immense mountain ranges, with the occasional cacti here and there. Not a cloud could be seen, not a breath of wind blew across the blistering gulch. I looked at Alexander, who had armored up except for his helmet, which had been permanently damaged; instead, he wore a cloth mask over his nose and mouth, covering the lower half of his face. He wore goggles for some reason. I cough loudly, and he idly looks toward me.
“What?” His voice is dull with boredom.
“How are we going to get across?” I ask, concerned. He just rolls his eyes at me and points with a Phazer rifle. I widen my eyes with surprise when I see what he’s pointing at.
Off road vehicles. Cars. Cars are something that hasn’t been seen, save for in the Human kingdoms, and only the more advanced ones at that, in all of Aladoria. Couldn’t the Dragonlings just get hovercraft?!
“We can’t afford hovercraft, Danica Crown.” Alexander says out of the blue, reading my mind like an open book. Which I guess it is, seeing even when I throw up defenses around my mind, he still gets in.
“So we settle with the next best thing, off road cars. However, these are different than standard cars. They’re made to endure heat that no vehicle is capable of withstanding, the body is heavy duty bullet proof metal, and they are designed for intense levels of speed, even in the desert. We’ll be traveling on this thing, so no complaints. It’s the fastest way there, even my supersonic speed would take too long.” He then walks over and starts it up.
“Come on you all, hurry it up!” He shouts at Orph, Summer, and Ore.
“I can’t wait to go see the big city of the Chromatic Dragonlings, I’m sure they’ve got awesome shirts and dresses and…and…” Alexander gave her a stern look.
“We live in a desert, with very little water, little grass to feed a single sheep, much less anything else, there’s no trees, save for the ones living in the coast greenbelts. What makes you think that the city is like a city of gold? We’re living off the mercy of the Gem Dragonlings, and even that may not last long. Now get in, we’ve got a long way to go.”
