Chapter Twenty Four: The Vile Covenant
“And we are helping an enemy of our country escape prison, a dragonling no less, for what reason?” A general growls at me. This was not going to go well.
“Listen,” I growl, now extremely irritated. “I don’t CARE what you think, but this is important. There is an insurrection going on in the chromatic kingdom, and also civil war between the gems and chromatics. Their government is extremely unstable, and we can’t know if they will attack us once this is said and done. We have to do something!”
He is about to speak when a rush of cold wind blows through the room. I suddenly felt a presence in the room. They were back, again. In the center of the room, the Covenant leader, Signas stood silent, and menacing. What is he doing here?! How did he even get in here?! He turned and looked at me, then at the general.
“I would suggest you followed your commander’s decision. You never know, the dragonlings may just strike at any time. It is better to at least know what’s going on than to be blind as a bat to their presence. Times have changed, fairy. If you don’t understand that, your enemies will take advantage.” I scowl.
“Get out of here, Signas. I know your secret.” He wheels towards me. His menacing eyes glare at me through the mask he wore.
“Excuse me, Crown? What did I just hear you say?” He said barely above a whisper.
“I know who you were, Signas. Alexandi never died. You and your Covenant are the Remnants of Alexandi, am I correct?” He in a flash draws his sword and presses it against my neck.
“Why yes, Crown. However, knowing and doing something about it are two different things. I suggest you get your nose out of other people’s business, before it gets you in trouble.” With that, he dissolves into black smoke, the room is dead silent.
The general wearily sighs, and says, “Ok, Danica, what’s this big plan of yours? I for one do not want any more nasty surprises from Remnants and dragonlings today.”
I smile. “We send a small, elite team, including myself to drop directly into the prison, get Alexander out, and then get home. No need to over complicate things right?” He just sighs.
“Yes, I suppose you’re right.” I love how people see things my way sometimes. I knew from the beginning that they’d want to take their time and prepare, so I figured at least another few hours before I had to go again. I left the base and began walking around, enjoying the pleasant ocean breeze. Feltatus pretty much always has salty air, because obviously, it’s build around the entire bay. I spy Drasmere by the port, so I walk down to him.
“Hey, how are you?” I ask him, in a good mood.
“I’m fine. Did the debating club cause you unnecessary trouble?” He said teasingly.
“Not too much. Just the usual why are we helping our enemy kind of crap.” I sigh. I stare at the ocean, suddenly bored to death. I stand up. “Sorry to cut things short, Drasmere, but I just want to go do something over at the palace.” He grabs my hand, and kisses me on the cheek. I sigh.
“Ok, Drasmere, I know you’re worried, I’ll be careful.” He smiles.
“See you later, Danica.” With that, I begin heading back towards the palace, preferring to kill as much time as I could possibly kill. When I finally arrive at the palace, I immediately head for Quin’s quarters. I wanted to ask him a few things.
I manage to find him without little trouble. “Hey grandpa, can you tell me about Alexander? I mean, you obviously fought against him a lot during the war, I would assume you would know something about him.” He stares at me for a moment.
“Where did this come from?” He half smiles at me, not sure what I’m getting at.
“I just felt like knowing more about him, for instance, did he have anyone close to him that you knew of?” He sighs.
“Ever heard of Noble Team? The Redhawk Division?” I sit and nod. “He was the their leader, but more importantly, they were close comrades, like a family. In the days before the Siege of Qunisati, the Noble Team made a brave, if not foolish effort to repel our armies from the town, at the cost of their lives, all except Alexander died. The next time I met him in battle, he was furious, but did not act nearly like he did when he poisoned me after the Year of Storms.” I nod, then reply,
“Thanks grandpa.” At that moment, a messenger came in.
“Danica, the men back at the base say it’s time to get ready to go.” I nod, bow to grandpa, then rush off. As I leave, he strokes his beard, pondering something. I didn’t have time to wonder. I had a mission to prepare for. I keep my promises.
