It had been a few weeks and Parker had been working hard building that tree house. Kristina had almost completely changed her mind about it after Morgan had fell out of the tree that day.
"He's gonna break his neck babe!" Kristina had told her that night. She knew she was upset, but she couldn't understand why. "Oh come on honey," She retorted, cocking her head to the side and putting her hand on her hip. "The tree was literally five feet tall." Kristina shook her head. "What if he had climbed an even bigger one?" Parker sighed. "He's all excited thinking I'm gonna build it for him. What if I promise to make it extra safe? You can even design it if you want, that way you can 'double mom proof' everything." She tried, finally about to give into defeat. Then Kristina had surprised her.
"Fine." She said, even though her arms were still crossed. She really did look like Morgan when she was pouting. She couldn't resist smiling. "Wait- what?" She asked. "You can build the damn tree house, but I am serious. I want it to be safe. Not too high off the ground, it needs to have walls and a roof. I want him to be able to be in it and not have to worry about it falling out of the tree. " She rubbed her temples. "He's just so little. I don't want him to get hurt." Parker hugged her other half.
"I know we hate to admit it, but he's really not so little anymore. We tell him all the time that he's a big boy now, but we really need to realize how true that is. He's going to be doing things like climbing trees and picking up snakes-" Kristina's eyes got big and she gave her a stern look. "Which I will tell him not to and he'll do it anyway so I'll teach him which ones not to touch," She quickly put in as she was just now working herself out of the previous argument with the gorgeous but not afraid to get petty woman in front of her. "My point is, he's growing up. He lives in the woods. We've got to let him be a kid, and unfortunately we can't be there to save him everytime he does something stupid."
Kristina walked up and laid her cheek into the taller woman's chest. She wrapped her arms around her waist and squeezed tight. "I wish I knew what I was doing as a parent. I am absolutely clueless." She said aloud. Parker snickered. "Honey, I don't think anyone really knows how to deal with their kids. You just learn as you go."
Now after all this time, she was finally finishing it up. She had let Kristina design everything the way she wanted. She intended on painting it, but as long as it was sanded down and in place, that could wait. She put a couple of hinges in the door way and screwed the door on tight, then opened and closed it a few times to make sure it wasn't gonna stick or fall off. It was set for now.
She went inside and looked around. It had a window in each wall, a built in table on one side and a bench screwed in place right beside it. She had placed a countertop going all around the tiny house with cabinets underneath. The wood was sort of reddish but it smelled amazing. Cedar always took her back to her old house her dad had made her. She sighed with relief and smiled. "Not so bad, if I do say so myself." She said out loud to no one in particular. She stepped back out on the deck that went around the outside of the treehouse and saw Morgan and Kristina walking up to trail towards her.
"What do you think?" She asked Morgan as she got down. "It's awesome! Can I go look mom?" He asked Kristina. "Go on, but be careful." She said and he took off up the rope ladder. "I mean it Morgan!" She yelled but he was already inside. "He'll be fine. It's pretty nice in there actually, although it will look much better after I paint." Kristina wrapped an arm around Parker's waist in a half hug. "It looks pretty nice." She admitted. "I like the whole porch thing." Parker rubbed Kristina's arm with her hand. "Wanna go up?" She asked with a big childish grin. "Babe, I don't know-" Kristina began but Parker was practically begging. "Please?" She asked again. Kristina rolled her eyes and laughed. "Okay, okay. Let's go look." She said with a smile as she let Parker give her a boost up the ladder.
They made it up and found Morgan sitting at the bench. "Look mom! This thing is full of neat stuff." He said and he proceeded to point out anything and everything. "You can even see all the trees everywhere 'cause of the windows!" He said excitedly. "Thanks mama." He said as he hugged his mother. "This is awesome!" Parker hugged him back. "I'm glad you like it, but you better thank mom because without her permission, you would have never had this thing." Morgan turned to Kristina. "Then thank you mom." He said, now giving her a hug too. She looked at Parker who was on the other side of the room mouthing something along the lines of it's true. "You're welcome. You can stay out here for a little bit longer, but when it starts to get dark you need to come home. Understand?" He nodded his head and went back over to his table and his chair and they left.
"You really think he'll be okay in there by himself?" Kristina asked as they walked the short distance from the tree house to their actual house. "Yes. He's only a couple yards away from us and it's not that high up like you requested. He's only got about thirty minutes or so before nightfall. What do you think about chicken and broccoli for dinner?" Parker asked, changing the subject so her wife could focus on something else. "That sounds delicious actually, but only if you're cooking." Kristina said, kissing the blonde on her cheek and walking in the house through the back door. "Well, I wasn't planning on volunteering you to cook it." She said, thinking she was out of earshot. "What was that?" Kristina asked with a smirk, popping her head back outside. "Nothing, nothing." Parker said as she walked inside. "Mhmmm." Kristina said with a laugh and off into the kitchen they went.
