While mopping the floor on a Thursday morning, thinking about yesterday. I wanted to ask him about it. Should I?
Suddenly, I heard a knock on the door. Oh it was just Mr. Kelly. He brought a good breakfast. "This is another breakfast for a good girl!" he said taking out the blueberry pancakes and strawberry waffles from the paper bag. "I'm sorry if I cannot cook."
"Well, you should try. You will never know unless you try, sir." I told him while I prepare the plates. He stopped for a minute. Did I say something wrong? Not sure if I did. But he said, "Oh well, I want to take you back home!"
My eyes were in disbelief. Like what? Go home? I am not sure if I wanted to go home. No. I want to ask him first. "Uhm why? I think we had a trace already."
Mr. Kelly's voice fluctuated. "Trace? Oh, uhm, you mean yesterday. Hmm. I want to make sure."
I felt a sense of hope. "So my dad was found?"
Mr. Kelly went to his room and came out dressed. What's going on? He told me to dress the same as when I was found beside the church. Good thing! I washed it last Tuesday. I think it's dry.
I am still in doubt about what is going on but we hit the road. Seeing the red light, I know it is the good time. "Mr. Kelly, about yesterday, why did you look so problematic? I mean that is how I saw you."
"Really, Janice? It's because the police is giving us the wrong report!"
"What? And why?"
"You will never know unless you try." His voice changed into a revengeful tone.
Okay? So? Maybe I'll just take a nap.
I woke up passing by the Nickel Diner. We are now in my place!
I was super excited about seeing my mom again for weeks but a bit sad because dad is not with us. Mr. Kelly asked some directions and I pointed out the places where I get to go like the church, aunt Helen's house, the park, Nickel Diner, and of course our house.
I got a bit of tears because for so long I have been here in my place. Thank you Lord!
"That's a great house you got there!" Mr. Kelly said while parking in front of our house.
I ran and knocked on the door excitedly wanting to tell mom that I can now hear. There was no response after a minute. I knocked again. But there was none. There was no response from inside but I thought of where she might be. Maybe she was in Aunt Helena's house? Let's see!
Mr. Kelly parked in front of my aunt's house. It looks like no one is here as well. Mr. Kelly decided to check from behind.
A few minutes later, from behind, I heard a gasp. "Janice!" I looked around and saw my mom. She was shocked that I heard her. "Janice! Where have you been?" she motioned her hands in sign language and crying.
"Mom, you don't need that anymore." I said putting her hands down. "I can clearly hear you!" I shouted for joy.
Mom didn't believe me at first so she murmured a few lines.
"Mom, I love you too." I told her and she hugged me. I heard what she said. She said I love you so much Janice. It was a joyful moment that I heard that from mom for the first time.
"Oh, Janice! I can't believe it! How? Tell me!" She wanted an explanation and I told her the story of a good man who bought me a hearing aid as an appreciation.
"I wanted to meet him and thank him, is he?" mom pointed out the car.
"Yes, he is here!"
Suddenly, Mr. Kelly showed up from behind. "Janice is she—"
"Mom!" I didn't expect that from mom. The moment they made eye to eye contact, she waved her hand quickly and slapped him.
"Mom, what's wrong?" I kept on repeating that question, but mom told me to go inside.
I refused. "Mom please, what's going on? Mr. Kelly, what is going on? Please tell me!"
Mr. Kelly stared at me with eyes that shouts the same question, why? Mom grabbed him by the arm and slapped him again. Mr. Kelly grabbed my mom's arm. This made me get in between them. "Mr. Kelly, don't hurt her!" "Go inside!" mom shouted pushing me away. "This man is not an angel! He is in fact the opposite of an angel!" I really could not understand why but I asked Mr. Kelly the question that I popped in my head. "Sir, is there something I need to hear?" I said in between of them.
"Janice, you are not into this! But your mother is!" he pushed me away so he could face my mom. "This is between a boss and a taitor's wife!"
I could not believe the words I heard from Mr. Kelly. He was a good man. He is a good man. But what I am now witnessing is not from a good man.
Lord, what is happening?
