kario12 is a well-loved author on this site, with her most popular book being 'Porcelain Skin' which has over 4 million reads! It was really fun to interview them, and here is what they had to say!
Why did you start writing on Wattpad?
I came to Wattpad simply looking for free books (I'm a cheapskate. Lol) But when I realized that the members were actually writing the books themselves, I figured I'd give it a shot. Prior to Wattpad, I'd written music/lyrics/poetry but had never completed a novel. Once I realized that anyone could do it, I couldn't stop.
What's been your proudest moment on Wattpad?
The first time a reader told me that my book had changed her entire outlook on life. That it had made her a better person. That was a good day for me because my goal is to impact lives with my stories. I want to make people think and consider life. I want to make people more aware of other people's sufferings so they can be more compassionate... and that's what happened. Being thanked for writing an impactful story is an amazing feeling.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Nature. I feel like you can compare any emotion to nature: Angry storm, happy sunshine, gloomy rain, a whirlwind of confusion, a tsunami of grief... etc. So nature helps me reach the more emotional side of myself and since I'm not an emotional person in real life, pulling that kind of inspiration from nature helps me so much. :) And then, of course, I also pull inspiration from my own life experiences.
Which book has been the most fun to write and why?
That's tough because I've loved writing all of them. I could say my first book (Porcelain Skin) because writing was so new to me then and it was a blast to see people's reactions to something I'd written. But then, my latest novel was super fun too because I understood my writing technique really well and it was so much easier to lay out the story and know how I wanted it to turn out. Pretty sure the book I'm working on now (Plastic Hearts) will end up being my favorite though because it's complex and challenging. I'm so excited about it. :D
What's the hardest part about writing on Wattpad?
Knowing how people really feel about my stories. I've noticed that readers tend to mimic the opinions of the readers before them. For example, I'd had a few million reads on Porcelain Skin and never had anyone complain about a particular character until one day when a reader pointed out something she didn't like about her. And then suddenly everyone was hating that character. So, as much as I love the comments, they're not actually helpful when I'm trying to decide if people love my stories or if there's something that could be improved.
Which chapters are your favourite to write and why?
Oddly, I absolutely love the gruesome chapters. In my first book, it was when my MC's dad died. In my story, Tender, it was when my MC had a horrible motorcycle accident. As a romance writer, I imagine it's strange that I prefer emotionally devastating or physically damaging scenes over writing the fluffy lovey chapters... which is why I'll probably switch over to thrillers and horrors at some point. Haha!
And finally, what advice would you give to a new writer on Wattpad?
Write characters with flaws. Perfect characters are boring and unrealistic. :)
