Jim's POV:

Jim paced around his office all afternoon, running scenarios through his head about what would happen next. One thought led him onto another, an endless trail of predictions winding through his head, completely shutting him out from his surroundings. He didn't notice, nor care when Alex left to go spend more time with Marcus. He didn't notice that William did not return home that night, nor did he hardly even notice when you came into the room.

".. James-?"

"Yes?" Jim was on autopilot- lost in his head but responding with short, precise comments to push everyone away faster.

"Are you okay...?"

"Of course." Jim wasn't necessarily lying- he felt fine, he was fine. Just thinking... endlessly thinking.

".... jim you're scaring me. You've hardly talked to me since Harvey died, when you do you're either really cold or watching your every move, saying things that don't even sound like you.... I miss you."

"I'm sorry you feel that way. I'll try harder." Jim replied, although part of him halted to a stop when you called him 'jim'. ...

"....... you're doing it again. It's like you're shutting everyone out, trying to make everyone happy so they won't bother you. Jim please... just talk to me."

"I'm fine, my dear~." Jim stopped in his tracks, his eyes dark, staring at you in frustration.

".... no you're not, James...." you replied, causing jim to tense up. Damn... he hated your persistence sometimes.

"Listen. Y/n. I have a lot to think about. If you see William anywhere, send him in." Jim states, before continuing to pace back and forth.

"Oh.... you don't know.....? James, Williams not coming back tonight..." you replied, jim stopped pacing again and stared at you. ...... ah. .... damnit. He was staying the night with.. her.

"... I see. .... alright."

"James, it's getting late....." you said, jim could see you were trying really hard to get him to open up a bit, or at least calm down. So, he sighed, looking down at the floor a few moment before slowly nodding. He should at least make an effort to be himself again- no matter how frustrating it was.

"Of course. ... you should get to bed, I'll join you in a moment~" Jim smiled, noting your small smile in response as you left the room. Just as you were out of sight, Jim slid over to his laptop quickly, switching the screen from where the camera filmed the empty street where William had formerly been with his lady friend. He clicked to a new destination, this one inside Jim's building. He searched a few different rooms before landing on the one that contained Alex and Marcus, who were sitting on the floor talking and laughing. Jim raised an eyebrow, then pulled out his phone. With it, he sent out a quick text.

'Watch your back.'

Then he leaned forward and looked intently at the laptop screen, as Marcus checked his phone without showing Alex, making up some excuse as to what it was so Alex wouldn't be curious. Once he has read it, he simply put his phone away, smiled, and continued joking around with Alex about whatever. Jim crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow, slowly nodding to himself. .... hm. He couldn't say he didn't respect the boy. He was a lone wolf- had his way of protecting himself, and was ready to face any consequences that came with it. Alone.

Which could sometimes be even more dangerous... however, jim understood the kid's reasoning. So, smiling calmly to himself, jim clicked off the laptop before waltzing out of the room to join you.

He found you in his room, which he basically saw as both yours and his as this point. And he was content knowing that you seemed to think the same. You were already I bed, laying down holding your phone above you as you scrolled through something. You didn't seem to have noticed him come in.

So.... jim slammed the door shut.

Predictably, you squealed and dropped your phone directly on your face before you jolted into a sitting position.

"Wh—??! Jim-!!!!" you threw a pillow at him and he laughed, managing to deflect it.

"Sorry!! You looked so vulnerable, I couldn't help it~" he quipped happily, feeling actually a bit less stressed around you than he had been before... hm. He was in the rare good mood again. You huffed but seemed to be desperately trying to suppress a smile. It.... wasn't working very well.

Jim chuckled again, before climbing into bed with you finally. Jim noted your temporary silence, so he went silent as well. ..... seconds after, he felt something soft slam over his face, causing him to jump. Hearing you crack up as you tried to suffocate him, jim caught on pretty quick and laughed as well. Eventually he got the pillow off, both of you left laughing at how childish you were being.

"Revenge is sweet." You grinned over at him, and he chuckled, shaking his head.

"Mmhm. Now go to sleep." He smiled, watching as you huffed and smiled back, crawling into his arms. He felt himself tense a tiny bit... it was still foreign to him, having someone close to him that he genuinely cared about... foreign, but nice.

His smiled widened slightly as he felt your face softly press against his chest, as he carefully ran his fingers through your hair. It was nice to be like this... to be with you. ... trying not to think about all the things he had to do, and all the possible outcomes of every situation ever. .... with you beside him, he was able to calm down, able to just... not think.

He loved you so, so much. .... he needed to make more time to show you that. ....
