Mac pov.
My eyes opened to reveal a white room. One I'd seen too many times. The rest of my body had yet to move because of the sedative that was likely to be running through it. The door to the room opened and a man entered carrying a cup of coffee.
"Hey man," Jack grinned at me, "Welcome back to the land of the living."
"Ha yeah," I chuckled finding the strength to lift my head and turn it towards the chair where he was moving to sit in, "thanks."
Jack got quiet and rather serious. My eyebrows ruffled together at this. And then looking around the room I became even more confused.
"Where's Skye?" I questioned which only earned me an even more concerned look from my partner.
"Mac," he said all too seriously, "Skye left nearly 6 months ago. Right before you quit the Phoenix and went off on that little solo mission of yours."
My mind raced as my brain searched for my memories of the past few months. Just about that time another face entered the room. She smiled softly at me and that's when I remembered.
"Hey Mac," she slowly approached me placing her hands in her back pocket, "you had me worried there for a minute."
I just stared blankly at her for a moment. And Jack looked from the girl to me.
"Please tell me you at least remember her," the man pointed his thumb back at her and a strange expression crossed her face.
"Of course I remember Nikki, Jack," I sighed rolling my eyes at the man. When Nikki kept her confused expression I continued reassuring the both of them, "I just got a little confused for a second is all. I swear."
"Mmm..." Jack drew out crossing his arms like he didn't believe me, "If you say so pal."
"So Mac," Nikki stepped forward ignoring the previous conversation, "how much of the last few months can you recall."
I attempted to push myself up in bed which only resulted in a hiss of pain and a concerned look from the man next to me.
"Well," I huffed, "I remember pretty much all of it."
"Pretty much?" Jack questioned, "what can't you remember."
"I don't know," I shrugged, "it's weird. I think they'd dosed me with something that day you found me. I can't remember any of that day before the bullets started flying."
Jack and Nikki exchanged looks for a moment before Jack sighed and turned to me.
"Jonah Walsh," was all he said. My eyebrows ruffled and my brain just couldn't connect the dots here.
"I'm sorry but you're going to have to explain to me how my dad's ex partner fits into all this," I stated looking Jack in the eyes.
"I'm sorry Mac, this ones on me," Nikki fiddled with her hands and refused to look me in the eyes, "I got bad intel on this group. Had I known that Jonah Walsh was even potentially Goliath's boss that you were sent in to meet... I never would of...."
She trailed off for a moment before continuing.
"That's why they drugged you before taking you to meet him. Walsh found you out and it was a trap," Nikki sighed and stopped again looking at Jack for the words.
"What?" I asked looking back and forth between them but they stayed quiet, "what aren't you two telling me?"
"It wasn't a trap for you Mac," Jack responded quickly, "it was a trap to get you in order to lure your dad there."
I stared at him blankly. I hadn't seen or talked to my dad since the day I quit the Phoenix, what made Walsh think my dad would ever come for me... then again I spent all that time searching for a man I thought abandoned me. Then another question formed in my thoughts.
"He didn't take the bate did he?" I asked a bit on edge.
"No," Jack shook his head, "you know you're dad, you two are just alike. He had a plan up his sleeves. Your dad is safe and sound back at HQ with Matty interrogating your old boss Goliath."
"And Walsh?" I pressed.
"Nowhere to be found," Nikki huffed, "it's like he already knew what James had planned before he got there. He fled the scene long before Jack and the Phoenix team arrived."
I nodded and fiddled with the IV in my arm only earning a slap on the hand from Jack to quit. The room got very quiet after that and Nikki took it upon herself to leave the room. It was several minutes later until Jack spoke up again.
"Hey man," he said catching my attention, "I'm sorry about your friend."
A soft chuckle escaped my lips causing me to wince at the sudden movement of my ribs.
"The weird thing is, if that had happened a day earlier I wouldn't of even cared," I shook my head as I spoke, "and I can't even tell you why I do care now cause I can't even remember what changed between us. Whatever happened in that lost 24 hours... it was enough to make a zebra change his stripes."
Silence fell over the room again before I smiled again with a much softer laugh this time so not to shake my midsection.
"Robert had given me more bruises than Goliath had in the past few months, yet he was the one who watched my back," I said earning a strange look from the man next to me.
"Doesn't sound like much of a partnership," Jack leaned back crossing his arms over his chest.
"Oh it wasn't," I agreed, "I just can't wrap my head around it..."
"What pal?" Jack questioned with a curious expression.
"Why?" I ruffled my eyebrows together, "he died protecting me. And his daughter..."
"Man listen we can get Riley on finding this girl but you can't sit here and blame yourself for what happened back there," Jack scooted to the edge of his chair and closer to me placing a hand on my bed, "these things happen and we can't go back and change it. But I need you to know that there was nothing you could of done to change any of that."
"I know man," I sighed shaking my head once more, "it just bothers me that I can't remember what happened."
Jack nodded from the chair beside, "I know brother."
