Mac pov.
I'd had more than enough problems since I returned from Hawaii. Skye wasn't kidding when she warned me about Murdoc coming for me. But it wasn't exactly for the reasons I would have guessed. And when it came to Nasha... I should of known better than to bring her into this kind of life. My mistake nearly got her killed. But at least she was safe now, and as for Murdoc... he wouldn't be getting away again any time soon.
In the past week I'd recovered a hard drive from a waste land and faced yet another persistent villain in my life, the Ghost.
I'd had a hard time sleeping since that particular mission. It hadn't been easy without Jack there with me but even if he had been, I still would of been pretty messed up. According to the Ghost, there was a bomb somewhere. It was for me... they were all for me.
"Fancy seeing you here," Jack smiled at me walking into the Phoenix lab. It was the middle of the night, so I knew a lecture was on its way.
"What are you doing here?" I questioned going back to fiddling with the paper clip in my hands.
"I think the better question is what are you doing here?" Jack leaned against the table in front of me and looked at me with a knowing look.
"I just had a lot on my mind," I confessed without putting up much of a fight. Truth be told I didn't have as much of a problem confessing things to Jack when it was just us, I knew he would get it out of me sooner or later anyways.
"Usually when you've got something bothering you, you sit out on the back porch with a cold one," Jack observed, "so why here?"
The machine next to me finished doing its work and the results can up on the computer screen. Jack looked at it questionable, then looked back at me.
"What are you doing?" He asked. I sighed in return and put my paper clip down. I leaned into the computer screen reading the results before answering. My eyes widened when I understood what they said, but I still couldn't believe it.
"Mac," Jack pressed placing a hand on my shoulder causing me to blink several times and look at him.
"Um," I stumbled for words, "remember that vial of blood I received at Jill's funeral?"
It took a lot of strength to not lose it saying her name in this lab, but we both held it together.
"Yeah," Jack nodded, "the one Murdoc's little friend brought you. What about it?"
"Well," I sighed, "I was curious. The man had said it was proof... but I didn't believe him. Lately it's been all I can think about so I tested it against my own blood."
"Wait a minute," Jack held his hand up stopping me in confusion, "Proof of what?"
I shifted uneasy in my seat, certain I was going to get lectured for this.
"The day that...," I began, "um the day Murdoc killed Stone... or I thought he killed him."
Jacks eyebrows ruffled and his eyes shone with sympathy and sorrow.
"He sent someone to me," I said not looking the man before me in the eyes, "the same man who gave me this," I held the vial of blood up, "he told me that..."
I couldn't do it. I couldn't say it. I'd sworn I wouldn't tell anyone. But now Murdoc was in custody... what could he do?
"Told you what bud?" Jack gripped my shoulder tightly.
"He told me Stone was still alive," I said it. Jack pulled away from me in disbelief.
"You were told your son was still alive nearly a year ago and you're just now doing something about it?" He looked at me blankly, "Does Skye know? I mean... Mac, why didn't you tell me?"
"Because," I threw my arms up in defeat, "it's Murdoc. I wasn't even sure if I could believe him or not. I was given strict instructions to separate myself from Skye, which happened all on its own really... but after that I didn't hear anything about it, I was convinced Murdoc was just playing his usual mind games... but now."
I looked back at the computer screen ignoring the look plastered on Jack's face.
"But now?" Jack leaned in even closer.
"Based off of this..." I trailed, "that vial of blood... I think it's Stone's."
"You think or you know?" He asked pulling away now.
"Jack," I sighed shaking my head, "I'm almost a hundred percent sure. The only thing that could make it certain would be..."
"Skye," Jack finished for me when I found myself at a loss for words.
"If I had a way to test this against her blood and it came up a match then I'd be certain," I nodded, "but even without that.... I think my son is still alive....."
I was out in town the next day picking up a few groceries for the house trying to keep my mind occupied. I needed to tell Matty about Stone but how could I. I needed to have a sit down conversation with Murdoc but that wasn't going to happen without either Matty or my dad.
My dad and I had grown closer lately but this was a subject I wasn't comfortable discussing with him. If my son really was alive, I'd already become my father, abandoning him before he even knew who I was. And that was something that terrified me.
I got home and had most of the groceries put away before my phone started ringing. I'd noticed how Bozer wasn't home which was odd. Maybe he and Leanna were hanging out. Or maybe he was at Phoenix. Jack had been up there filing some paperwork from some of the missions he'd been on without us lately. So once I finished here I guess I would head up there. According to Jack I was better off surrounding myself with anyone and everyone then being alone when my mind was in the state it was.
I pulled my phone out of my pocket seeing Matty's contact on the screen. While I thought the act of her actually calling instead of just texting me was odd, nothing really set off any alarms. In my mind, she was calling me up to the office for a new mission.
"Matty," I answered the phone with a smile. I opened the fridge and put the milk in then closed it, turning back around to the counter.
"Mac," Matty's voice was serious, stern, and... worried, "I need you at the Phoenix now."
"Sounds urgent," I chuckled while still becoming serious. I ignored the rest of the groceries seeing as they wouldn't spoil if left out and headed for my car keys.
"You need to get here right now," she said, becoming even more mysterious as she spoke. I stopped outside my front door locking it before heading to my car.
"I'm coming," I walked quickly but not with an urgency in my step, "what's the problem?"
"Mac..." she trailed off and it was at that moment I stopped dead in my tracks listening carefully for the words to follow. And what did had me in a full on sprint to my car and sent me speeding down the road towards the Phoenix.
"There's been an accident," she said, "it's Skye."
