Skye pov.
When I returned to headquarters from Hawaii, I was not greeted back with open arms. I was lectured by my boss and Brody, for at least an entire week. But as soon as that was over, another mission was assigned and I was off again. Our missions weren't quite like the ones that I had taken back at Phoenix, these were more intense every single time. And this one had to of been the worst of them all.
Brody and I were sent to gather a group of American innocents that were being held captive overseas. These Americans had been drawn there by an exotic vacation that they otherwise would have never been able to afford. Most of them were genuinely good people who were just easily fooled. And the sad part about it was no one was coming for them. They were cleverly chosen so that no one would go looking for them when they disappeared, and that worked for a while. That was until an S.O.S. message was leaked from one of the prisoners. No other organization was willing to look into it, so Brody and I were sent to investigate, and what we found was astonishing.
Twenty people were being held, tortured, and experimented on. By the time we arrived, five had already lost their lives. It was not easy but Brody and I were able to get the remaining fifteen Americans out of the camp. However, when running with many weak, starving people, it's difficult to move at a fast pace. We spent four days just trying to make it back to exfil. And on the fourth night, my lack of sleep had begun to catch up with me.
Brody and I sat across the small room from each other. We both sat looking out the window of the small shack we had managed to fit everyone into. The moon was high in the sky by now and the only sound was those of the soft snores from the sleeping people around us.
My eyelids felt heavy and I wanted nothing more than to close them and drift into a peaceful slumber. I hadn't slept a wink in the last four days, constantly on alert and watching for anyone who was bound to be hunting us by now.
"Miller," Brody whispered from across the room, followed by a long and deep yawn, "get some shut eye, I can watch for a few hours then we can switch."
I straightened myself on my stool and held tighter to my gun as I did so.
"I'm good Brody," I smiled at him, "but you go ahead."
He gave me this look that I knew all too well. Truth be told, ever since I got back from Hawaii, I'd begun to except the fact that I was going to have to move on from Mac sooner or later. And while Brody and I hadn't had much time alone since then, I'd given into him, letting him know very clearly that I was alright with whatever was happening here. I wasn't sure if we could exactly say we were together but we were definitely something.
"I'm serious," I tilted my head at him, "If it makes you feel better I'll wake you up in a few hours and I swear I'll get some rest."
He took a moment longer to look at me with that unsure look before sighing. He softly leaned his gun up against the wall and stood to his feet. With a few short strides he was in front of me.
"Goodnight," he said leaning down and placing a kiss on my forehead. I smiled back at him in return.
"Goodnight."
Brody settled down on an empty space in the floor, tucking his arm under his head for a pillow. I turned from the window to him until I saw his breathing soften and I knew he was sound to sleep. Of course I wanted to curl up down there next to him and enjoy the peace that would come with closing my eyes but protecting these people and getting them home safe was my priority.
I looked back out the window watching the streets. There was no movement, and the silence surrounded me. I was stuck sitting there with only my thoughts to keep me awake, but soon that wasn't even enough. Within minutes my eyes had closed and I'd finally lost the ability to open them again.
