I sat with my elbow propped against the window and my glaze was fixed on the clouds. Jack was doing the same only he seemed a bit more tense. After nearly an hour of silence I couldn't hold it in anymore so I turned my head his direction. He didn't seem to notice me, or maybe he did, because when I spoke he didn't even flinch, his eyes stayed focused out the window.
"We're flying on a private plane, I've heard the term 'mission' and 'procedure'," I began counting the list of things out on my fingers, "and you aren't even trying to hide the fact that you carry a gun anymore."
After a moment of silence Jack calmly turned his head to face me.
"What the hell do y'all do?" I asked through nearly gritted teeth.
"That's classified," he said and instantly I was on my feet.
"Bull," I said standing tall, my fists tightly clinched at my sides.
"Hey now," Jack raised at hand to me to calm me down, "I said it was classified. I didn't say I wouldn't tell you."
I relaxed a bit at the reassurance that I would soon know the truth, "So you're like secret agents then?"
"Kinda," Jack said as I took a seat in front of him, "we are the people you call when you can't call anyone else."
"So back in Tennessee?" I asked, "What was that all about?"
"That? Oh yeah we were having kind of a slow week. So we took down a drug dealer. Matty was pretty sure he had the local police in his pocket so-"
"That's a slow week?" I wasn't surprised there was a drug dealer among those people back home but the fact that catching him was just considered a 'slow week' in the world of Jack and Mac astonished me, "So what is considered a normal week?"
"Well," Jack began, "Usually Mac and I spend our weeks tracking down terrorist groups or defusing bombs- well Mac does all that."
"Mac defuses bombs?" I questioned.
"Yeah among other things," Jack waved his hand around like that was nothing.
"So y'all have gotten into some pretty heavy stuff," I stating making an observation based on all that he had told me so far and Jack nodded in agreement.
"Yep," he popped the p at the end of his word but we both knew I was not going to be satisfied with just that statement, "Mac and I have been doing this for years now-"
"And Riley and Bozer?" I interrupted him.
"Not as long as Mac and I. Bozer only recently found out about all this when this man came to Mac's house because he was hired to kill him but instead Bozer was there and-"
"Woah wait a minute," I stopped him again holding my finger up to him, "Someone was hired to kill Mac?"
"Yes princess and if you would stop interrupting me I could finish explaining everything to you," Jack said and so I shut up, "Anyways," he continued, "Thats when Bozer found out. Riley, we pulled her in after-"
This time Jack paused on his own and this far away look came into his eyes.
"After...?" I asked bringing Jack back to reality.
"After Nikki," was all he could say and in an instant I was begging to know more.
"She was our first field analyst," Jack went on after a moment, "We thought she had been murdered but a few months later we come to find that she was alive and working for the people who had stolen the biological weapon and shot Mac."
I was right earlier, this was some pretty heavy stuff and no matter how badly I wanted to ask a thousand questions, I stayed quiet and let him continue.
"But later we find out she isn't working with them, she was an undercover agent trying to take down a mole in our agency," Jack still did not seem satisfied, even when he spoke of how Nikki had never truly betrayed them, "that mole just happened to be our former boss."
Now I felt like I was listening to the plot for some up coming tv show or maybe I just wanted to think that because everything Jack was telling me was so surreal that I wasn't sure why he was telling it to me in the first place. But then again, I asked.
"Wow," was all I could say to that.
"Yeah," Jack nodded at me then his glaze traveled back out the window, "Poor Mac was heartbroken enough from Nikki's betrayal but when we found out Patty was the mole, I thought that kid's whole world was going to fall in around him."
I had only heard one thing from that whole statement and I couldn't help but ask-
"So Mac and Nikki?" Jack looked back towards me at those words in realization.
"Yeah," he sighed, "but just between me and you, I'm glad nothing more happened between them once we found out she was working for the CIA, she'd already broken his heart enough."
I knew what that was like, to get your heart broken. But I could not imagine thinking your ex-girlfriend was literally the enemy after you thought she was dead for so long.
"Jack," I said after a long moment of silence. He turned to face me and I gave a light smile in hopes to reassure the man, "I won't do that."
He smiled back and just looked at me.
"I sure hope not princess," he said, "I don't think he could handle that again."
