SVT – New Year Special
Happiness exploded like fireworks
. . .
Universe Two
The sky was pretty clear so that was a good sign. You pull on a thicker pair of sweats and hunt around for a warm sweater in preparation for the cold weather. When you're dressed you barge into Chan's room.
"Dino, you loser!" You only tag the insult on when you find that he's still sleeping. "We're leaving in ten minutes."
"Well, why didn't you wake me up earlier?" He retorts as he literally rolls off the bed and looks for clothing to wear.
You roll your eyes dramatically even if he can't see, "Well excuse me if I thought a fully functioning adult could take care of himself."
"Don't look!" He shouts as he changes, stumbling around his messy room.
"As if there's anything I want to see," you scoff but you still leave the room. Your apartment-mate was sometimes so annoying, but that didn't mean you weren't best friends.
. . .
Chan drives as you turn some music on, both of your heads bobbing with the beat.
"It's been a while since we've seen them, eh?" He asks, eyes staring into the night sky.
You hum in agreement, "Yeah, I've missed them."
. . .
Minghao and Junhui kind of jump on you as you exit the car. They go through the customary rubbing of your head and poking of your sides until you have had enough.
"Okay, back it up!" Your voice was harsh but your eyes shone with playfulness. "I was expecting a welcome, but not that."
"You're no fun," Jun teases, "I remember you used to love this."
You stare at him with a critical eye, "Um I think age has given you a faulty memory." You duck out of the way before he could give you a light cuff on the head.
Ducking behind Minghao who had started laughing at Jun's upset pout, you grin and send a cheeky wink at him.
"Minghao, protect me." You demand jokingly as you use him as a meat shield, turning him to face the faux-angry Jun who had difficulty hiding the wide grin that was threating to burst forth. Fortunately, the game comes to an abrupt end when Minghao turns on you and leaves you vulnerable to attack.
You allow yourself to be jabbed by Jun for a total of five seconds before aggressively poking him back. Minghao can't resist the poke war and dives happily into the fun, all while the actual maknae watches in silence.
"Does this have to happen every single time?" Chan asked, baffled by the lack of maturity from his hyungs. As he turns around, he sees the fakest hyung of them all, Soonyoung running towards them.
The three of you received no warning as Soonyoung literally jumps on you. You all topple over like dominos and are struggling to make sense of the situation as you get an elbow to the nose and a knee to the calf.
"Soonyoung," Jun seethes when he realizes that his new coat had been tarnished by speckles of mud and the culprit has no reaction time before he is crushed by three bodies. The three comprise of you, Minghao, and Jun who have created an unspoken alliance and attacked simultaneously.
. . .
When the five of you are finally settled atop a grassy hill filled with other people, families or groups of friends, there are only a few moments before the show starts. Soonyoung and Minghao share a blanket with you while Jun and Chan sit on the other.
You smile and laugh as the two fight over who should be the pillow and Soonyoung relents with a sigh, "Fine, but when I tell you that my leg is falling asleep you move."
"Yeah, like you extended that courtesy to me," you pout exaggeratedly, "You fell asleep on me and refused to move for a solid forty-five minutes."
Soonyoung waves his hand casually, "I was drunk, my actions then cannot be accounted for in this way."
You still make a point to headbutt his chest, where you would be resting for the next while and snicker as Minghao thumps his torso onto Soonyoung's legs. "Well then. For all our intents and purposes, we are drunk as well."
"Off of what?" His voice was incredulous, but his eyes were curved into a smile nonetheless.
"Off of love~!"
. . .
When the first burst of light brightens the night sky, the chatter falls silent as everyone is riveted towards the fireworks' dazzling displays. But your gaze naturally falls towards the friends that you've known for so long.
Chan's eyes were drooping slightly, but the smile was still there as he stared into the sky while his head rested comfily against Jun's shoulder. Living with him sometimes sucked, but hey, you couldn't ask for a better roommate. Truly, the two of you knew each other a bit too well.
Jun was wide-awake and caught your eye, sending you a quick wink before looking back into the bright sky. You chuckle a little at his antics, he never really grew up and for that you were thankful. He and the fellow resting on Soonyoung's legs never failed to drag you into some scheme or another.
But you never really minded.
As for the person you were currently using for a pillow? Well, Soonyoung was Soonyoung, you doubted that another year would change him. Always bright energy for a romp or two with you all, minus or rarely with Chan while being the pseudo-mom was impressive.
The fireworks exploded outwards as the new year came. And although your happiness exploded with it, it didn't fizz out like the bursts in the sky.
