The entrance hall was ablaze with torches and echoing with footsteps as the students made their way towards the Great Hall for the start of term feast. Rose took notice, as she and Harry walked past the tables, people were whispering about them. Rose didn't like that they kept looking at her in a strange way.

Rose sat down and looked towards the teachers' table. There was no sign of Hagrid. Rose saw a woman dressed in all pink, sitting between Professor McGonagall and Professor Snape, neither looked happy with the woman next to them.

The First years entered and Professor McGonagall set the stool down putting the Sorting Hat on top. Everybody watched as the first years.  The first years watched the sorting hat, along with the rest of the school.

Rose listened to the Sorting Hat's new song. It was about the founders and how the strife between the houses started. Once the song finished everyone clapped and muttered. There was a warning in the song for the new first years as well as the rest of the school.

Professor McGonagall started the sorting, calling out the names of the students. Rose clapped when someone was sorted into Gryffindor. Once the last first year was sorted Dumbledore stood up.

"To our newcomers, welcome! To our old hands -- welcome back! There is a time for speech-making, but this is not it. Tuck in!" Dumbledore said with a smile and the first years gasped as the tables filled with food.

Everyone began to eat and talk with one another. The feast went on for a while. When the dessert finished, the tables cleared and Dumbledore stood up. "Well, now that we are all digesting another magnificent feast, I beg a few moments of your attention for the usual start of term notices. First years ought to know that the forest on the grounds is out of bounds to students -- and a few of our older students ought to know by now too," Rose, Harry, Ron and Hermione each shared a smirk.

"Mr Filch, the caretaker, has asked me, for what he tells me is the four hundred and sixty second time, to remind you all that magic is not permitted in corridors between classes, nor are a number of other things, all of which can be checked on the extensive list now fastened to Mt Filch's office door. We have two changes in staffing this year. We are very pleased to welcome back Professor Grubbly-Plank, who will be taking Care of Magical Creatures lessons; we are also delighted to introduce Professor Umbridge, out new DADA teacher," Dumbledore said. There was a round of polite applause.

"Tryouts for the House Quidditch teams will take place on the--" Dumbledore stopped talking when Professor Umbridge stood up and made, "Hem, Hem" noises, Dumbledore looked taken back as the new teacher stood up and walked to the front, intending to make a speech of her own.

"Thank you, Headmaster, for those kind words of welcome." She stood looking over all the tables. "Well, it is lovely to be back at Hogwarts, I must say! And to see such happy little faces looking back at me!" Umbridge said, but when Rose looked around, she didn't see any Happy faces. The students just looked bored and didn't seem to care what she was saying. "I am very much looking forward to getting to know you all, and I'm sure we'll be very good friends!" Umbridge smiled at everyone.
