Chapter 39

Hailey

 When Ty and I pulled up to the house I jumped out and ran to the house, Ty a couple steps behind me. "Amy?" I called "Papa?" no one answered. I turned and looked to Ty. And we ran out the door heading for the barn.

When we reached the barn and shot through the door I saw Amy,Papa, and Dr.Thomas were standing in front of Nexus's stall door. "no" I said I ran to the stall 'please don't be gone.' 

When I got to the stall Nexus was on his side with his eyes closed, and he wasn't breathing. I dropped to my knees at his side "no"I said rubbing his face "what happened?"I asked turned to the vet but Amy answered. "Granddad came out to feed the horses and found him like this, and his food was never touched." "they called me right away and I got here as soon as I could but we were too late." Dr. Thomas said "I'm sorry, sweet heart, but he's gone."

"no" I said "nononono this can't be." I dropped my head and laid on Nexus's side. Crying into him. "No, this can't happen." 'No, this can't happen, I just got you back, you can't leave me now.' "well I have to go make dinner." I heard Amy say a minute later followed by reseeding foot steps.

Then I heard Papa say "well Thomas, thanks for your help" "no problem" "now lets go get you your check." then more foot steps. I was glad they left, I wanted to be alone. Then I realized I wasn't alone when I heard Ty walk into the stall. He stood behind me for a minute then sat down next to me.

I looked up at him but didn't say anything. He moved closer and I sat up looking up at him then laid my head on his arm. He lifted his arm and I shifted closer as he held me. Not saying a single word, leaving me to my thoughts.

Ty sat there comforting me never speaking, never saying anything, just being there.I clung to his presence like a life-line, not wanting to let go cuz if I did I would lose myself and never be found again. 

I never spoke or moved. I  just sat there in his arms watching Nexus.

We sat there for an hour but it felt like years. The tears had stopped and everything was quiet.

 I pull back and sat up. Wiping the tears from my eyes, I laid my hand on Nexus's face and sat there for a second just looking at him. 'Nexus, I didn't know you for very long and you me but I love you very much and I always will' I . Then I stood and walked out without saying a word.

'I need to get out of here' I walked toward the door. I could hear Ty following me."Hailey?" I didn't answer "Hailey, are you ok?" I stopped then but didn't turn around. I heard Ty walking up behind me. I turned around when his steps ended right behind me. 

"no, no I'm not. First I lost them to a mountain lion, then James takes them and sells peach, next Nexus comes here too weak to even stand, and now this. No, I'm not ok, and I don't think I ever will." I said tears welling up in my eyes.

Ty stepped forward and pulled my into his arms. I immediately sank into him. I started shaking as I tried to hold back the sobs. "shhhhh" Ty said stroking my hair "shhhh, it's alright I'm here, you'll be ok." I shook my head at the last part but didn't say anything.

After a couple minutes I pulled away but kept my eyes cast down. "we should head inside" I said "are you sure your ok?" I shook my head. 'no I was no where near ok, but if I don't leave it won't get any better.' "yeah, I'm fine" I lied. Ty placed his hand under my chin and gently lifted my head forcing me to look in his eyes.

I freaked out and stepped back breathing becoming heavy. "Hailey? whats wrong?" Ty said worry filling his voice. He stepped toward me reaching for my hand. "no, don't touch me leave me alone" I yelled stepping back again. I lost my footing and fell to the ground. "Hailey, its me Ty, I'm not going to hurt you."
