About three weeks later...
Thursday, 6:29 P.M. ESTIt's been three weeks since I've left California. Harper is pissed at me because Mama Gold is down her throat about it, of course. But she's mostly pissed because she's spewing cover story after cover story for me, and it's starting to stress her out.
I apologize once more into the phone, telling her I just have a few more things to sort out before I can move out there and make everything 'official.'
"I don't think it's healthy for the b-" she begins to say, but I'm quick to cut her off as if Dane could hear from inside the apartment.
"It's really fine, Harper!" I say, trying to hold back the frustration of having to stay on the phone longer than I had intended. "I'm not stressed at all, I'm eating wonderfully, I even... bought those prenatal pills you take, or whatever!" I lie.
I trail off as soon as I hear the door to the apartment building click shut, whispering a quick excuse before hanging up the phone. I turn around to see Evelyn standing at the door, nonchalantly perched up against the railing.
I wonder how long she stood there, and quickly begin to retrace over all my words to see if I've mentioned anything about my... 'situation' too openly.
I don't think I did. I grew to be pretty cautious about this.
"He's not gonna let you keep it, you know." Evelyn suddenly says matter of factly, causing my heart to immediately stop in my chest. "Jenalyn, or Hayden... what are you thinking! Don't you remember-"
I rush over to her with a quickness I can't explain, yanking her down the three steps separating us without hesitation. "Shut up, Ev!" I growl, panic still settling over my body at a rapid pace. "Come here!"
I drag her little ways away from the apartment building- just far enough to where I know our hushed voices will go unnoticed, before forcefully shoving her.
"Don't listen to my conversations, Ev! It's none of your business what Hayden does-" I begin to snap at her, only to have her scrunch up her face in partial disgust before she cuts me off.
"No one was listening to your stupid conversation, Jena! Chill the hell out!" she sneers, before trying to stomp away.
I'm quick to grab her arm, spinning her back around to face me. "Then how do you know?!" I ask, trying to calm the racing beating of my heart unsuccessfully. "Does Dane know?!"
Evelyn snickers, though hurt clearly begins to show on her face. "Not because you told me anything, that's a fact!" she says, crossing her arms over her chest as if to be offended. "You're fatter, no offense. Plus, you freak out anytime drugs or alcohol are around! The only time you ever didn't want drugs was the last time this happened, So..."
My head feels so light, it could float away. I'm kind of starting to wish I could, honestly- but Rob won't let me leave until we come up with a plan for when this will inevitably come out to Dane.
"Please don't say anything to anyone..." I say, feeling like the weight of the world has placed itself on top of me, and is weighing me down. "I will leave as Hayden, and never come back for you if you do..."
