"I can't believe you made me do this..." Rob mumbles beneath his breath as he pulls out of the large parking gagrage at the Philadelphia airport where I had him pick me up. "Do you know how risky this is? Whether or not Dane is out of town- he always has lookouts."
I roll my eyes playfully, Rob's persistent loyalty to even the stupidest of Dane's rules not nearly as annoying as it had been before I had Hayden's life to run away to.
"I wanted to have some time to fill you in on everything going on with your-" I pause for a moment, a weird feeling in my belly arising as the words try to escape my lips. "The baby."
Rob nods his head slowly. I can tell the subject still makes him tense, but he somehow managed to try to show some interest. "Yeah... yeah," he says after a moment, so clearly racking his mind for his next words. "Do you know what you're having yet?"
I shake my head though I know he can't see the rocks in my head rattle while staring so intently at the road. "Not until my next appointment," I say after a moment. "-and maybe not even then, because I'm really small... the baby might not be growing normally."
Rob raises an eyebrow, but keeps his eyes peeled on the road as he nods his head once again. I can tell he's more interested in all of this than he'd like to lead on- but I think I expected him to be like this.
That's why I had no problem letting him know it was his to help me save it. Deep down, I know he misses when he had a family... he wanted the little girl he'd told me about all that time ago. He wouldn't let Dane take that away from him again...
"So... what's everything you need to fill me in on..?" he asks almost nervously after just a few moments of silence between us. "What's so important you got me out in this crazy shit?"
He's attempting to play around with me, but I can't help but feeling some type of way about his phrasing.
What's so important?
I bury the feelings. I bury the words threatening to escape my lips about how stupid of a person he could be for even asking.
It's Rob... I shouldn't really expect much more coming from him.
"The uh- family out there knows about the baby." I say instead, "They're mostly okay with it now, so if we manage to pull this off with Dane, we should be good..."
Rob doesn't waste much time before responding. He raises a brow as he peeks a glance at me from the driver's seat. "Oh really?" he asks with a tinge of sarcasm. "That family is okay with you mothering the child of your pimp's sidekick? Sounds like a great family, kid."
My eyes fall flat immediately, and I gently shove him though he drives. "No, asshole!" I say back. "I told them it's... someone else's. Someone from California that I'm 'supposedly seeing.'"
Rob's brow raises once again in skepticism. He slows to a stop at a red light and actually turns to face me as he responds this time.
"You're 'seeing someone' in California?" he asks, with both disbelief and snark in his voice. "-and told that family he got you pregnant? Are you seriously delusional, or is this a joke?"
"What?" I immediately snap. "What do you mean?!"
Rob lowkey rolls his eyes and turns his head back to the road before responding. "Dane isn't going to just let you keep some kid because some California douche cake is supposedly the one who put it inside of you." he says matter of factly as he steadily accelerates and begins to weave through traffic. "That's just about as bad as the kid being mine! Do you know what betrayal is, or...?"
I haven't really thought about what I'm going to do about Dane, only because no option really seems any better or easier than the other.
He's going to try to kill me and this baby no matter what way I spin it.
Rob does bring up a good point though... the best way to approach this definitely wouldn't be by feeding Dane the same story I had to feed the Golds.
"So.. I'll tell him it's his?" I ask as soon as the thought crosses my mind.
I can tell the idea doesn't sit perfectly with Rob, but after a few moments I also see the acceptance spread across his face as he realizes that it's the best option, too.
He leaves a few moments of silence between us, choosing instead just to nod his head in some sort of agreement until he can find words.
"Well..." he begins, sounding as if he's not quite sure where to go next. "This baby better be worth all the shit that's going into keeping it safe from Dane."
"It's going to be." I state matter of factly after a moment. "This baby is a miracle, remember?"
