"I can't do it!" I wail, still gripping the heavy metal knife Dane placed in my hand to my chest.
"Please- don't!" the man quickly but weakly pipes in, going mostly ignored by both me and Dane.
Dane takes a deep breath, but I can tell the patience he's had for me since showing up here is wearing thin. "You can, Jenalyn... You will. Just take a deep breath and give him something to write home about!"
"I can't!" I'm wailing again before he can even finish. "I can't do it Dane, please don't make me do it!"
Dane let's out a more frustrated sigh now, loud over the sound of this man's flubbering.
"Get some air, Jena. Just...go." He sighs once more, taking the knife from my hands and turning back to the guy, expecting me to run.
For as much as I'd like to run, I can't move at all.
The conversation picks up between Dane and this guy, but I can't hear over the voices in my head.
Why am I even here? Why do I have to do this? Nothing is making sense anymore- but my legs are still rooted to this spot.
"-already got it figured out." Dane laughs, a cold laugh that sends chills down my spine. I only pick up on the end of their conversation. "See, I don't like losing out on money, and that's what you were about to make happen. Lucky for me though, and you too if you think about it- you have a daughter about the same age as that recruit of mine you killed! So, it looks like she'll be picking up the workload."
My stomach turns cold. This was his big idea?! To kidnap this guy so we could tell him we're pimping out his daughter? I don't want any part in this!
Before I can stop myself, I hear my shaky voice call out to Dane. "Please-Dane! Can we-" I go to say. His face angrily turns towards me though, before meeting me where I stand trembling in 2 strides.
"What's the problem?" He asks between gritted teeth.
"Dane, please. Can we just- can we go?" I say, feeling more tears threaten their way to the surface. "You told him what you wanted already! Please, I just want-"
Dane laughs as if I told him the funniest joke before kissing the top of my head.
"Sure, Lil Bit," He says, placing his arm around me and walking me towards the guy still strapped to the chair. "We can leave right after you do what I told you."
My heart sinks to my feet as I realize there's no getting out of this. Not if I want to keep me and my baby healthy, and alive.
"Okay, okay- but please, after?" I plead, feeling resignation wash over my mind and body.
He doesn't say anything else, but hands me the knife I previously had. Every cell in my body is shaking as I turn towards this man- Dane's 'words of encouragement' in my ear feeling anything but encouraging in this moment.
"It's okay, Jena. This guy's a fucking sick bastard- he killed Jayla! You think he doesn't deserve this? Go ahead, babygirl! Give him something to remember!" he excitedly exclaims.
I can sense the happiness this is giving him, and I feel disgusted. Why am I doing this? How- how do I keep doing this to myself?!
I do it anyway- I know I have to.
I step forward, ignoring the man's pleas for help and Dane's toxic excitement as I raise the knife, and quickly slice down the man's chest. He cries out in pain, and I can't bear to look at him any longer. I find myself focusing instead on the drop of blood that managed to fall from the blade now resting against my own leg.
"Can we go?" I say almost too quietly to hear over this man's yells for help.
"We sure can, Princess. You did good..." Dane says. I almost expect a 'for now' to follow, but he says nothing else.
The next few seconds move so fast, I'm not entirely sure what happened. What I do know though- is that in the instant before I turned to face Dane, a million warm splatters of blood hit my face just as I looked up to see a hole where the man's face used to be.
